The only Shay worth mentioning is Ryan. Charlevoix probably had 10 guys better than Casey and Stephen over the years .... B. Taylor, J. Drenth, S. Miller, M. Smith, M. Bush (who beat Ryan from time to time), etc... trust me, my brothers and I lost to all of them. The Shays were average, except Ryan of course.
Traverse City has had plenty of studs, I just can remember any.
AND ... Kelly Smith from Petoskey (1992?) is by far the best girl from Nothern Mich. Period.
Don't forgot our guys - I'd say Todd Kulawiak ('87) and Matt Johnson ('88) were just as good, if not better, than Flynn. Especially Todd. One hell of a basketball player, too.
Dave Ernsberger was the bomb diggity. He was from Potasky I think. Plus that kid could drive a motorcycle crazy quick!!

By far better than several time All-American Melanie Weaver from Scottville who is also in the UMich Women's Hall of Fame?
Need some help; where did Kelly go to college and how'd she do?
Kelly ran at Colorado. I think her best finish was 3rd in the 1500m at the NCAA meet, best time around 4:12.
she went to CU and finished 3rd in XC nats in '96 and '97. won the 1500 in '96. she's all over the CU all-time best lists. her younger sister is one of my best friends.
Mandi Long Zemba for GVSU. Amber Smith for Colorado. Northern Michigan University has produced some fast runners, but almost all of them come from out of state.
Um... if you were talking about runners in HS, McMullen wan't all that great-- I think 4:19.
And you would have to add John Hughes from Traverse City, former state record holder in the 1600. Went to U of M for about a year and dropped out after HS.
Bush beat Ryan Shay only one time I can think of, and that was in a questionable photo finish in the mile at the Petoskey invite. Hand timing gave Bush the win, but in the Petoskey news paper the next day, the photo finish shows Shay across the line first. Name another time Bush beat Shay, "from time to time". Ryan had one of, if not the longest, winning stretches in the state of Michigan during regular season CC and track.
TC Alum here. Here's a site w/ Traverse City Central's all-time bests. No one ended up being a Mark Smith-type but we have a lot of guys that ran in college--
U of M- Hayes, Hughes
MSU- Crawford
CMU- Brokaw
EMU- Franko, Wheeler
Hillsdale- Cook, Wolf, Houghton
Siena Heights- Decker
GVSU- Haveman, Terhune
Just off the top of my head.
IMO, runners with the best careers were Franko and Cook (both collegiate all-americans, Franko later ran a 2:19 'thon), and Houghton (2:2x marathoner after graduation). And of course Hughes's HS career although he fell off the map afterward.

Err .. The picture in the News Review was head-on. It didn't show anything. Bush won. I think he beat Ryan in a cc quad meet once, but I could be wrong there. Regardless, Bush and those others are better than the other Shay brothers. (I'm not trying to argue Bush is better than Ryan - just that he was good in his own right). By the way, I was in that mile race. I was 5th, way out of the picture ... lol.
Actually, Bush may have beat Ryan in CC in Charlevoix on their golf course. Ryan was sick with the flu and finished around 6th. That would be the only other time. Also, Bush was a Senior, Shay was a Sophomore.

Let's agree that they both were good. They kicked my a** that's for sure.
Can you think of others who belong in this discussion?
TC guys...what happened to Joe Agostinelli (i think that's how you spell it), he wasn't in the same breath as these guys...but he was the man at TC while i was in school and ran against him a number of times. Did he go to college anywhere? Do anything worthwhile?
I ran against him as well (1600).
I believe he went to Arizona State and stopped running.
Max Hogan from Rogers City and John Tunison from Charlevoix should also be mentioned. Although neither of them were state champs.....they were certainly great runners during a great era of Northern Michigan running. Also......John Goble from Petoskey should be included (1:55 ish-4:16?).....top 20 @ Kinney Regional....
Bill Taylor was hurt his senior year in track or probably would have run in the low 9 range for the 3200 since he was a Kinney finalist in cross. Also, Max Hogan(Rogers City), John Tunison(Charlevoix), and John Goble(Petoskey) should be added to this list. All fast runner but nice guys also!
