I'm going to pick up some brooks racer ST's for Chicago and do some speed workouts and a few medium distance (12-16 miles) runs in them. How many miles should I try to have on them for the marathon?

on those shoes, 30-40 miles, although there really isn't a break in time for running shoes anymore. Just imprinting the insole.
I've pretty much found that if a shoe gives me trouble in the first run it will give me trouble on all runs. So I'd say you want to run in them enough to make sure they won't give you trouble and then you're fine.
If it is a shoe you have been in before, you can get away with 20-30miles to make sure there are no defects. If it's a different shoe for you I like 50-100 miles.
Thanks- It is a new shoe for me. The miles I am planning on doing are going to be both testing the shoe out to make sure it doesn't give me trouble and breaking it in so my foot and it are used to each other on race day.
Its already broken in. Just take the sock liner out and put your previous liner in them. You're good to go.
I try to do 1 long run (20+) in my racing shoes. If they feel fine, no blisters or other problems, then they are ready to go.
As everyone else is saying, you don't really need to break them in. Rather, just test them.
Doing speed workouts in them is kind of a waste of time. You won't be racing that fast in them. I would suggest just doing long runs and maybe some MP work in them.
