In December 2004 I had been "off" from running for about two a months after my last XC race, and had just doing 20-30 minutes 4-5 times peer week at an easy pace. Suddenly, I become motivated to start my track preparation a few weeks early, and out of nowhere decided to tackle a MONSTER hill workout. It was the dumbest thing I've ever done...
I sustained a serious knee injury during the workout that didn't get better after three months of rest. I ended up having surgery, which didn't fix the original problem and caused an entirely different problem. All in all I missed a total of nine months before I could start training again, and I got permanent damage (chrodromalacia) out of it.
Then, even since I resumed training in September, I've been riddled with a plethora of injuries that have kept me from training consistantly. I got shin splints, a foot injury, and a back injury. Every time I have tried to resume training, I just get hurt again within a few weeks. F***!
So I think back to December 2004 and wonder what would have happened if I never did that zealous hill workout. I wouldn't have gotten the knee injury and missed nine months. Then I probably wouldn't have incurred all of the other injuries I've had in the process of trying to get back in the game. F*** that workout!!!!!
