Kenyans dominate African championship
By Omulo Okoth in Mauritius
What a rich medal harvest for Kenya on the final day of the 15th African Championships! The haul swell to 15 medals to enable Kenya finish second to South Africa on the final day of the Championships on Sunday.
David Kimutai Rotich set up the Kenyans with a 20km walk gold medal in the morning ? between Villas Caroline and Pearle Beach Hotels along the Black Water District seafront.
Rotich opened up the floodgates as the Kenyans just took the Germain Commarmond Stadium by storm in the afternoon session, which saw three more gold medals, even from the least expected quarter, men?s 4x400m. Other medals were one silver in 10,000m and bronze in women?s 4x400m relay. Rotich timed 1:23.58. Alex Kipchirchir, who had won 800m on Friday added a 1,500m gold after running from behind for close to 600m.
He confidently glided to victory in 3:46.54, beating Morocco?s Adil Kaouch to second position in 3:46.72. Shadrack Korir and Elkana Angwenyi finished seventh and eighth in 3:48.16 and 3:48.69.
But the most spectacular victory for Kenya was the women?s 800m in which Commonwealth champion, Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei proved that she is the new kid on the two-lap block, beating Mozambican former twice world champion, Maria de Lurdes Mutola, for a third time this year.
This was after Josephine Nyarunda had done much running, which saw her burn the opposition to submission. Jepkosgei kept the crowd guessing while maintaining second position until the home stretch when she unleashed her long strides to overtake the ?Maputo Express? and win in 2:00.64.
Mutola timed 2:01.08. The men?s 4x400m relay quartet of
George Kwoba, Vincent Mumo, Sammy Rono and Thomas Musembi stayed in front throughout the four laps and won
in 3:06.78.
The women?s relay team would have done equally well as Nyarunda started well and passed the baton to Elizabeth
Muthoka, who did not disappoint.
But Annet Mwanzi slowed down to be overtaken by Nigeria?s, Kate Obilor, making it difficult for Florence Wasike who had to contend with a bronze medal in 3:39.79. South Africa won the gold and Nigeria the silver.
Mike Kigen, who won 5,000m silver behind Ethiopia?s Kenenisa Bekele on the first day saved the day with another silver in 10,000m after Uganda?s Moses Kipsiro snatched the
gold from his grip.
After setting the pace, Kigen finished in 28:03.70, behind Kipsiro?s winning time of 28:03.46. John Cheruiyot Korir was fourth in 28:10.83 behind Ethiopia?s Abebe Dinkesa, while Wilfred Taragon was seventh in 28:24.57.Wasike had earlier
finished sixth in the women?s 400m hurdles (58.11), as South Africa?s Janet Wienand won in 56.97.
