what a sick recruiting class...just look at some of the other freshman that are lesser known that they are getting for free...incredible, perhaps the best recruiting class of any college sport all time? how often does a school get like...8 all americans, not even the dukies get that for hoops...

Believe it or not, a lot of those guys are walking on. Not unlike Stanford back in the day. Yes, Vin is that good of a recruiter.
Anyone that suggests a program led by Vin Lananna is breaking rules has never met Mike Riley!

Arkasas is similar. Wilson was getting virtually nothing when he won the NCAA 3k indoor.

Somehow, I sincerely doubt that anything short of divine intervention would cause YOU to shut your mouth!
The NCAA doesn't need to do anything simply to appease the jealous nature of people like you. If you had met Vin Lananna and talked to his athletes during their "glory days" together at Stanford, you would know why he has 38 young men on the Oregon cross-country team right now.

That is true the Mercado brothers both came for what I read was fractions of a ride. Vin is amazing this is a great team in two to three years I just don't know if all of the guys are good enough to make it three hard seasons you could see a lot of transfers. Did not Kiptoo transfer from Arizona or something like that or was it New Mexico?

In 1997 Vin did the same thing at Stanford.
He brought in:
-Jamie Gifford (2x FL finalist, 9:00, 3:52)
-Isaac Hawkins (2x FL Finalist, 4:07/8:58 state meet double, 8:56 for 2nd at Nats in the 2mile)
-Jonathon Riley (3:43, National Champ indoors- Mile/2mile, 2x FL)
-Gabe Jennings (4:02, 2xFL, etc)
There were 3-4 more HS Studs whos names escape me. That particular year only about 15% made it through his system, but such is the way of The Vin. Two that happened to thrive under (that year) him were NCaa Champs and went on to represent the US at either the Oly or WC.
He can also afford to burn through them because this isnt a one time thing. The year before this class he brought in Stember (and others- Murley, a 3x FL guy and others...) and the next year Andy Powell (and about 10 other AA types).
Stember, Jennings, Riley and Powell were probably 4 of the 5 (Karie) best HS milers in 10+ years and Vin took 3 of them and turned them into studs.
Powell (the 4th) ran 3:40.5 as a true frosh but had injury problems for the rest of his career.
I expect a similar scenerio at UofO where a small percentage thrive but those that do go to greater heights than 95% of HS stars.
i would take wisconsin's recruiting class over oregon's.

He does exactly what he did at stanford and dartmouth(and what is done at arkansas)... when they run out of athletic scholarships they use academic scholarships and booster money for cost of living expenses. This is what is done at columbia as well..Hey kid how would you like to spend only 3k a year to go ivy?
If anyone here thinks that Vin is not doing something very illegal then you are just plain blind. Look at the people he has on the team (including sprinters, jumpers, throwers, etc.). Even if you look at distance runners alone do you think the Mercados are really paying for 80-90% of there education? I am pretty sure they received Pell grants but I doubt that they would turn down fulls elsewhere to go to Oregon and pay. I doubt mommy and daddy would have been too high on this. What about Kiptoo? Was he enrolled last year? How did he pay for school? UNM did not release him.
By the way, you cannot use booster money for living expenses. That is illegal so if he is doing that then that is just one more law Vinny is breaking and the NCAA does not care. Hopefully the ncaa will pull their head out of their ass and see the obvious. Vin is cheating. I will say one thing - he is damn good at cheating! I just hope he gets caught.

Is what Vinny does BAD for American distance running? He (seemingly) hoards all the top high school talent and they don't (can't?) get the individualized attention they could/would get at another program. Yes, there are several athletes that thrive under his system, however, there are countless runners that fall through the cracks. Does he assemble the best talent, run 'em letting the cream rise to the top and not give any attention to all the rest. Just a question.

Grant Robison was also in that class. I'd say that's one of the best distance classes in history.

That makes three NCaa distance champs in one class. Two went on to rep the US in the Oly and the other at the WC.
Are Dobson, Hall, tenforde and Luchini the same class?
I think Sage and Luchini might be a year older then the other three.
In Vin's years at Stanford he coached two 3:35 guys and a 3:36.
Riley to 13:20s/3:38, Sage to 3:39 and NCaa champ, Lunchini to 13:22 (he had left but was still coaching Louie), Brad and Brent to 13:20s (Brad made the Oly team) and multiple NCaa crowns, Nutter and Jimmerson to 28:20s?? and an NCaa Crown.
Who am I forgetting?
Obviously there are tons of Seth Hjenys (13:40s) but I am talking about total studs only.
