The one thing I have learned in the past year (that I suspected anyway) was that a huge number of runners train too fast. I'm sure many of you have attempted to run around your aerobic threshold and been surprised at how ridiculously slow it is. USATF education pegs aerobic threshold at approximately 65% Vo2 Max, or between 130 and 140 BPM. Hadd is popular on here and pegs it at 70-75% Vo2 Max, or between 140 and 150 BPM. When I was in shape (I'm just starting up again after a few months off), 150 BPM was around 6:40 and 7:40 pace. 130 BPM I can only assume was around 8:00-9:00 pace. Obviously there is a huge difference in these paces. I was going to attempt to run at the 65% Vo2 Max for my base training and it really is between 8:00 and 9:00 pace. It is really difficult to run that slow, I pretty much have to take baby steps. While I realize that pace will drop as aerobic improvements are made, I am wondering if someone has some insight into this matter. I am assuming that the USATF has scientific basis for their advocating approx 65% Vo2 Max as aerobic threshold. Does anyone disagree with this number?
