speaking of old timers - from the front page today and an amazing story. It amazes what black athletes such as Jesse Owens, Rudolph, Tyus, Faggs, and Woodruff had to endure to be athletes in this country. great story.

thanks for the great story 16x!
Great report, KP. I still remember you and Jeff diving through the line a few years ago in Eugene, now you are pushing the great SA to the hilt! I'm wondering who this McDuffrie guy is... a 400 guy moving up? Looking forward to the recount of your 1500.
KP
EXCELLENT review of your 800...congratulations on an outstanding effort...keep up the great work...you keep devaney and I (and I'm sure many others) inspired!

Did anyone in Charlotte happen to watch Trent Lane in his field events? 95+ tossing the shot, javelin, hammer and discus. He was pissed because they reduced the weight in the shot put.
Gotta love it!
Great read/job Kevin!
I caught myself leaning towards the laptop as I read. I might have gotten 9th place.
See you this Fall

By the way the Boston Marathon had 181 starters in 1962.Orville, he said it was a 7 mile race, and I got the impression it was XC. It had a German or Dutch name (I had to ask him to say the name like 3 times, but still couldn't get my head around it). I'm still kicking myself for not asking his name. We met in the checkout at Walmart and he didn't mention running until we were nearly ready to leave. I'd been driving 10 hours and was anxious to get to my folks' place, and was too stupid to stay and chat summore. Damn...
old mutha f'er,
Thanks. I know I had my doubts about the 10,000m on Saturday. I think the DQ in the 5k was the only thing that left me motivated to run it.
KP, great description of your race. I enjoyed watching your efforts. You guys were definitely fighting it out like a couple of boxers.

See? Biscuit Boy bothers me. If he lives in Madison, I think he should just call me and we could work it out- or, maybe it turns out he's actually just another Zero.
I've got a couple of weeks free- starting next week. I'm wondering, should I go anywhere? Maybe a weekend in Manhaten with a beautiful girl? Maybe a quick trip to Paris? Or Bora-Bora? July and August are supposed to be good times to go to the south pacific. Or ski in Argentina? There's a great photo of tons of snow in today's new york times... what to do...
get a job, some would say- but I don't want no stinkin' job!
Amen to that.

You asked about upcoming Tamalpa track meets and yes there are two remaining...they are at San Rafael High School and begin with the mile at 6:30...8/22/06 and 9/19/06...on the 9/19 meet there'll be a special set up 3000 meters for our teammate to attempt the age 60 AR of 10:13 for 3000 meters...I believe that there'll be some pacing help, USATF officials and FAT timing for this one meet in order to count as a proper record.
Also there is still one more Empire Runners all comers meet next Wednesday (8/16)at Santa Rosa High School...judged by the recent results they have a pretty good level of competition as well.
Both the Empire and Tamalpa meets are open to everyone, regardless of affiliation .

Me and My Watch,
Work is HIGHLY overrated.

Ok, biscuit boy. I've said this before and I'll say it agin if I have to. Here's my proof, and here are the links, and you can see for yourself.
First, review the "Accolades." You'll see that my 3:47.88 1500m, from 1983, is the fastest Oshkosh 1500m ever. It was a real 1500m, at NCAA's, with fully automatic timing.
Second, review the "School Records." Ackerman had Kennan Tim put up this silly note: "*fastest time of two events posted." What does that mean? It means several things. First, it means that Bruce Coleman, who was the track coach until he got fired for having porn on his computer, and who had a nasty habit of sleeping with his students, just wanted to pad his resume. My 1500m was pre-Coleman. Coleman has no scruples. It means Zupanc and Ackerman don't like me (and they have reasons). I don't like them, either, but that shouldn't be enough reason for them to remove my name from the record books. They haven't been able to coach another runner to actually run a legit 1500m faster than 3:47.88, and they are embarassed. We all know that the 1500m is run at every single track meet, it's in the conference championship, and it's an NCAA championsip event. Still, they haven't had anyone run faster- ever. Not even the legendary Matt Groose could run faster than me- even though he broke my 800m record, and even though he ran a decent mile, he couldn't run a legit 1500m. For a while, Coleman was posting some kind of fake record- like he'd just subtracted 17 seconds from Matt's mile, or something. I called him on it- I was, like, Bruce, baby, you're cheating, you know, and he was, like, it doesn't matter because I'm being fired. Ackerman then just remoed the 1500m from the record books. It's like he's running some kind of secret-news organization- something bizzare. He's fooling his athletes, though- and I don't see them standing up for themselves. They could just say, Hey, Coach, how about we get a 1500m record just like all them other schools in the NCAA? But they don't, so they're dweebs.
Third, the mile, as fun as it is to run, isn't a championship event. It's a nostalgic and historic event, and if NCAA schools want to run it, they can- but it's just for fun, not for official-like.
As for dweebs vs me: I have never, ever, not said what I thought. I don't always win, but I do try. If I was at Oshkosh now, I'd be screaming bloody murder. In this case, I'm right- and I have the proof right here- but I don't have the power to do anything about it unless I run for governor or something. Hmm. Maybe I should run for some kind of political office...
thanks guys- I think you're right. I'm not gettin no stinkin job. I've got the rest of the summer to do as much lovin' and such and I'm for-sure a single guy so ladies? I'm about to bestow upon you (ladies) my god-given talents! And men- watch your wives very, very carefully, cuz I got nothin better to do during the day than to take them for motorcycle rides and horse back rides and trips to far away places...
wouldn't it be nice if that there fantasy was true?
I'd say more but I'm driving the yukon today which means I have to take out another mortgage to fill it up.
KP your description was so vivid I got some of them goose bumps reading it. I met you briefly in the tent where we were staged, we talked a bit about Dave Clingan. I regret being so wiped out after the M50 800 that I missed your incredible race! Now that kind of race is what we all hope to be part of and to actually be in the mix-- I guarantee Sal was really happy to have you right on him at the line.
Well I sincerely find all of that information very interesting. I guess if I had a legitimate record and it somehow got manipulated I would be pretty bitter about it too. Alot of the guys on the team now were not even born when you set your record(doesn't that make you feel like a master?) so please don't take it out on them. I will say no more about this subject. Good day and good luck.
Watch:
Do you want to hear what I think of all that? (please feel free to say no if you don't want to hear.)

I hope it the second weekend in August.
Pete,
It very likely was cross country but other than that I do not have a clue.
Yesterday I recieved my August copy of "Athletics"--"Canada's National track and field/running magazine. Do you or any of the o;ther Canadians on here subscribe?
I like it. It gives me an idea of what is happening in the sport in Canada. I find their Canadian history of various events very interesting. This issue has part three of the history of the marathon and covers my era--1960-1980. It brings back memories of friends and races.
Thanks Mike and skate. I'm still working back from injury so will shoot for some Sept/Oct meets. Hope to see you there.

PS: Nice job all you Charlotte folks!
