I mean...He did just beat who everyone thought was the current #1 runner in the world. He also beat the defending World Champion and the fastest person in the world last year. Only person he has not beat was Kerr but Josh didn't look too hot last year and Hocker placed 6th at US Indoors. He might just be the current best lol.
Lots of people make the faulty assumption that his laid back demeanor means he isn't competitive. Those close to him; however, say the opposite- Nuguse is ultra competitive. His numerous wins (or close losses) at the tape are evidence of this.

The entire concept of the killer instinct is honestly kind of stupid. All of these guys are competitive, even the ones who aren’t good enough to win DL races. It’s not like Nuguse wanted it more than Myers today, he was just better.
I think Nuguse has to be ranked no. 1 after today, with Nader and Myers rounding out the top 3. Both have a 2nd place finish with one being the world champ and the other the world leader.

he really gives middle kid from an immigrant family energy
Okay I know this might get some eyerolls, but I honestly think that the "he lacks a killer instinct" line is just some people's way of calling him gay (and implying off of that that he lacks top level macho grit or whatever).
I've listened to a couple of podcasts with Yared where he's mentioned that he grew up in a competitive home environment as the 4th of six siblings. It sounds like he and his siblings were pretty competitive with one another about academic success, and that he found it natural to transfer some of that same energy over to the track when he discovered his athletic talent.
I think most of the bad press he gets is an unfortunate side effect of competing in the most competitive era of 1500 meter running in my lifetime. Realistically, there are like 10 guys who could win a major championship. The goose, hocker, ing, Kerr, Nader, cam, wightman, nordas, cheruiyot etc. Nobody has established dominance.

Jakob has by far
Those days are long gone. Even at Jakob's best, he was off the 1500m podium in Paris.

Really? How many world outdoor golds does he have in the 1500? Or Olympic medals?
I think people look at his 5k record and overall success and forget how often he got beat in the 1500. If we talk about not having 1500 killer instinct, Jakob is poster boy.
He’s had a better overall career, but he is most known for getting beat twice in the WC before not even medaling in Paris 1500. Eugene/Budapest/Paris golds all 5k.

(I know he got the one gold in Tokyo 1500 and a couple silvers but that means he got beat, which is not dominating.

That wouldn't surprise me, but I'll give people the benefit of the doubt and say that it probably has more to do with his super chill, super-affable personality. People seem to equate being an a-hole with "killer instinct" and coming across as a super nice, smiling, and chill guy with not. But that's just dumb. As others have said, you don't compete at the level Yared does without having a killer instinct.

His championship record is no worse than any of his contemporaries’ and he absolutely dominated the DL from 2022-2024. Cheruiyot was the same way, almost unbeatable on the circuit from 2018-2021 but not as successful in championships as we might have expected.
If you want to talk strictly 1500m medals, Jakob and Cheruiyot have gold, silver, silver, Kerr has gold, silver, bronze, Wightman has gold, silver, and nobody else has more than one medal.
