It's more susceptible to weather and wind than normal courses. Even though it's net downhill, the windy areas on bad days really bog you down. It's like a wind tunnel sometimes with the headwinds.
Plus being more downhill early is probably worse mentally than more downhill later.
Why would you want Rupp on the team. He is past his prime? Still a great runner but his age just doesn't do it anymore with US having a handful of near world class elites.
Everyone knows he's a longshot but he's so steady that it gives him a chance. All he needs is for a couple of top guys to blowup and in a marathon that can definitely happen.

Exactly, it was a sad statement on US men's marathon for Abdi to make the team in 2020 and it would be the same if Rupp were to do so in two years.
It's over. 2:08:15 is a good time, but even Joe Klecker can run 2:05 now. Rupp might as well hang it up.
Rupp is not making another team and neither is Sara Hall. But they are both really fast at age 40+ and seem to love the sport and competing so who cares?
