Great interview. It's fun to see the sport through the eyes of a young athlete experiencing his first international competition. His positive attitude and composure in spite of what happened is impressive.

I like his balanced mindset. He's humble (saying he's the underdog as the new guy and he needs to validate himself), yet he's not intimidated by the Jamaicans, and he's focused on executing his race in his attempt to win gold. He draws confidence from his prior experience racing in the SEC, but he doesn't rest on his laurels (saying whatever fast times he's run before are in the past). He also wants to put the USA back on top in his event, but he's not putting undue pressure on himself, recognizing he's so young.

I also appreciated this quote: "And I signed a few autographs, took a couple pictures, 'cause you never know when or if the next day is promised to me or them. And they paid good money to see me, so why not give that love back to them? So overall I'm just happy to be here."

No, this is not completely uncommon to happen with blood draws/IV sticks/etc. It's called superficial thrombophlebitis, and resolves quickly with aspirin and warm compresses. Just sucks to have before the biggest races of your career.

I would like to know this as well. Not that I was ever fast, but a blood draw would certainly sour my interest in going pro.

Heck yea. Awesome to see. He's definitely adapting to full time running pretty well, and it's fun to think that he may yet have quite a bit of untapped potential. 2028 in LA could be AWESOME for the usa to have a new sprint star.

Turns out that the World Championships were short-staffed so they had to rely on volunteers to draw blood.

He said, in two separate interviews, that the clot swelled up as big as a "football," and a "soccer ball." That seems like a ridiculous exaggeration. As big as a golf ball, or baseball at the most, maybe?

I suspect it was likely actually somewhere between clementine and tangerine sized.
