After watching the Norwegian guy sprint up the hill in XC skis at 6min per mile pace, I became interested to see how fast an Olympic XC Skier could run a 5k on a track.
As many of you know, some of the all-time highest VO2 Max scores come from Norwegian XC Skiers. If I recall correctly, Bjorn Dahle recorded a 96. To put in perspective, Steve Prefontaine was the highest ranking distance runner I saw on any list and he was "only" at an 84.0.
I read somewhere the average NCAA Male Distance Runner comes in between 72 to 74.
Finally, does anyone know what Ingebretsen's VO2 Max is?
I realize VO2 max is only 1 of many components that makes a person an elite athlete but I would think there is some baseline for how fast a person with VO2 Max at elite levels can run a 5k.
