I don’t even like long runs . I cash out at about 12 miles . What’s with marathons ? And a consider myself someone who runs a lot . What’s the appeal ?
The Marathon is the GOAT. Challenge yourself, run one to see the appeal. "Once you cross that finish line, no matter how fast no matter how slow, it will change your life forever." Dick Beardsley.
I think the appeal for big-city marathons is that you get to tour a city on foot without having to worry about traffic. This makes the popularity of Boston all the more puzzling, since most of the route is essentially through the same kind of nondescript suburban sprawl that you could find in most parts of the country east of the Mississippi.

Not liking long runs is part of the appeal. You're doing something really hard. Nothing in life ever gave me the satisfaction of a well marathon.

Running 26 miles is hard... You can run 12 miles and still have plenty left.
It is hard to run 26 miles... even slow... and not feel like you've extended your self pretty well.
Racing that distance is just way harder mentally than shorter distances... and while the pain isn't near as intense as short races... you are beat to hell and many times dealing with glucose levels that make it a miserable experience (the wall/bonking)
There’s a certain prestige to the marathon distance. And the majors are an event unlike any other.
The manager of the Boston Red Sox, who also played in the majors for a while, said the crowds at Yankee Stadium at Fenway Park were nothing close to what he experienced running the NYC marathon this year.
To a hobby jogger it’s more about the experience than the distance or the time.

Sooooooo many people “run” marathons. Is it really that hard? The answer is no. If that many people do it, it’s not that freaking hard. Is it hard to race 26.2 miles? Yes. That is hard.

It is STILL harder than most things people do in their life.
I had some golfer clown arguing about how it is "harder to shoot par than it is to finish a marathon". His rational was the same as yours was in your post.
I then tried to explain to him that it was harder to finish a marathon than it was to finish a round of golf no matter what you shoot because "so many people can finish a round of golf" . Dude couldn't even comprehend my point.
Yes. Okay, no single event ever gave me the satisfaction of a well run marathon.
I know you just mean that a well run/executed marathon was really satisfying for you, but the way you phrase it keeps (humorously, unintentionally) minimizing major family events like births, weddings, graduations, etc. Like, I have literally LOL’d at both of these posts.

I’d rather run a marathon than attend my graduation, and I hate marathons.

You basically answered your own question. You cash out at around 12 miles. .So 26.2 miles would feel like an amazing accomplishment for you.
I never ran marathons…something about committing myself to running what amounts to an arbitrary distance…you kinda have to fool yourself into wanting to pursue it.

It is much harder to shoot par than finish a marathon.
