I've seen that and no world class athlete was in the race.
Sigi Bauer was in the field. He was world class at the time.
This was 1983. Ultrarunning just started to get a little more traction. Yiannis Kouros didn't have won his first Spartathlon yet. That happened 5 month later.
I've seen that and no world class athlete was in the race.
Running feats don't always have to be professional.
I think lmb was referring to the thread title "How an Aussie potato farmer beat the world’s best runners". I mean it's a great story, and I'm a big fan of ultrarunning, but lmb is correct to call the exaggeration in the title.
Who is disputing the validity of ultra performances? The point some made was that the1983 potato farmer would have experienced a different outcome years later.
It is not Ultra"RUNNING". You say it is a testament to human endurance and will. For you, I believe your personal statement of your experience. I am not trying to diminish how you feel about it.
As far as the "100 mile club exceeding most anything people here have done." That is quite a leap. For a very select few it can encompass running. You talk of completing a 100 mile as if most runners here could not do it.
Don't elevate it to something it isn't. It is 100 miles of jogging and walking for most. a 100 mile in 24 hours is several seconds under 14:30 pace per mile. A brisk walk at 4 mph over 25 miles is 15 minutes per mile and would take 6 hours and 15 minutes.
Sure, the distance exceeds a contest longer in which most people here have competed. So what?
I applaud those who have done it but don't get indignant and apply your standard to others. I have been in running clubs all over the US with runners of all levels of experience, ages, and ability. In all groups there were runners who tried in vain to qualify for Boston or run under 3 hours for a marathon. Several of them started doing ultras and then displayed the same attitude as you after placing in or winning their age groups.
For anyone wanting to be a member of a 100 mile club that is not the one for school kids, you can do one of the Mohican's in less than 32 hours (19:12 per mile pace) and prove it with a belt buckle. If being a member of the club is simply finishing, you can still let everyone know for just $24.99 (plus $5.99 shipping)
