After not making the college football playoff, ND football has issues a statement saying they are opting out of playing in a bowl game.
I don't know whether they are just a bunch of sore losers or are smart in just basically saying "it's not like making a bowl game is that big of a deal when you're expected to competed for national titles.". Either way it's arrogance.
I'd rather see them do this than do what Florida State did in 2023.
FSU finished the season 13-0 after winning the ACC Championship Game but were omitted from the (then) four-team playoff. They instead played Georgia in the Orange Bowl and a large number of their starters decided not to play in the game, some to protest, some to not risk injury before the draft.
It was embarrassing - Georgia 63, Florida State 3. Terrible ending to a fantastic season.
Structure D1 college football like Euro soccer: Premier League (32 best teams), First Division (33-64), Second Division, etc. Like soccer, add the element of promotion/relegation every year.
Premier League can then have their top 8 teams square off in a title playoff to determine the champion. No more committees, formulas, or polls. Bottom four teams get relegated to First Division while the top four finishers in the First Division playoffs get promoted to Premier the following season.
More freedom for schools to determine what level is best for their situation. Incentive to invest in players/staffs/facilities for ambitious schools. Motivation for old coaches t o stop mailing it as relegation probably means a firing. Many long suffering fan bases and mid-majors might be content to be successful in a lower division rather than trying to outspend big programs.
It will be interesting to see how the TV series "Here Comes the Irish" (second season announced) explains this. In the first season, they discuss the pros/cons of playing FBS football as an independent. (One pro is not having to play an extra conference championship game. One con is being limited to an at-large spot in the CFP.) They started the season 0-2, so this was a possibility.
How about, Notre Dame is not doing anything different that a spoiled child would do. Maybe they all should hold their breath until mommy does what they want. This is where athletics and competition are headed. Everyone gets a trophy, everyone gets to participate, and actual winning is not important. How about joining a conference and win out right? Isn't Notre Dame's other sports in the Big 10? Just slide over and join the party.

I was lucky enough to be at the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. Good times. Alabama vs. notre dame. Not a fan of either but free tickets! Miami! If you know you know. A Miami 6 is an 8 in your city! The talking heads leading up to the game were talking Little notre dame up. Before the game I saw a lot of irish arrogance, I think some of their fans thought they were better than Alabama fans. Gametime. Excitement! The hopeful faces of the irish faithful. LOL. Game was over quick, the Mighty irish didn't score until Alabama led 35-0. LOL. Watching the faces of these people throughout the game was priceless. After the game we saw plenty of butthurt irish fans. Oh yeah.
A few years later Shame. On November 22, 2016, Notre Dame was forced to vacate all games from the 2012 season, including the National Championship Game, as a former student athletic trainer was revealed to have committed academic fraud by doing substantial course work for two players and impermissibly helping six others, rendering some of the players ineligible. Shame. Shame. Shame.
Sure, but you can also look at this the other way.
UGA was the (back to back) defending champion and undefeated all year--they lost to Bama and were also "snubbed" by the playoff, despite being arguably better than a couple of the teams who made it. They chose to play a bowl game, beat FSU's ass, and proved to the committee that they should have made it.
Notre Dame proves nor gains nothing by sitting out. If they think they deserve to be in the playoff (which, personally, I do not think they do), show up and destroy whoever you have to face in the Poptart Bowl or whatever. Show everyone that you're actually a playoff caliber team instead of being stuck up. Or, join the ACC and get the easiest auto-bid of your life.

No, it just proved FSU played a weak schedule. They would have been around a 3 loss team if they played an honest schedule.

Probably a good move. With the playoffs using all the major traditional bowls, the leftover bowls are minor league. The seniors and juniors opting for the draft tend to sit our the bowl games to avoid injuries that could cost them a career. If you are a playoff contender -- which the committee felt they were -- why go to a meaningless bowl with an understrength roster? The coaching staff now will focus on hitting possible portal transfers to fill upcoming holes in the roster and strengthen places of need.
While I thought ND has a good argument for inclusion, I think it is a push between ND and Miami. If the committee had never published several weeks of likely rankings, ND wouldn't have much of a beef. However, the Committee had ranked ND above Miami for several weeks, and then flipped them after a weekend when both were idle. That doesn't make sense. Nor does the decision to include a three-loss Alabama, especially as two of those losses were late in the season.
