Longevity as a runner is basically being able to ignore the expectation of being past your prime but simply being able to sustain some aspect of prime fitness as long as possible. We are starting to realize with all sports that 40-50 is not old. In combat sports the term old man strength is become increasingly known especially in a sport like Bare Knuckle boxing in which men in there late 40’s and early 50’s are still proving they are better then ever. Eamonn Coughlin is listed as the oldest runner to ever break the magical 4 min barrier. He ran
3:58.15 at age 41 in 1994.
My question is as men and women are training consistently longer every year now it is not uncommon at all to see 40-year-olds running under 2:10 for a marathon and even under 2:05. How soon until we see a 50-year-old man break 4:00 in the mile?
As of right now the 50+ World Record is 4:19.59 by Brad Barton on 31 May 2019 at 53 years of age. However, Davide Raineri ran 4:10.30 at 47 years old. If you combine both of their ages and times the World Record for 50 is technically 4:14.94. I do think within the next 5 years we will see a 50-year-old run under 4:05.
Endurance is the ability to withstand hardship and adversity. The idea of simply being comfortable with being uncomfortable. It is almost acceptance you have accepted the idea of being miserable. This is required in anything that we do that is worth the outcome.
Distance and endurance are amazing feats in anything we do. For example, after I retired from running it took me years to find a new passion, and I found mine in none other than tournament poker specializing in multi-day tournaments, with multiple tables. At the WSOP annually it is not uncommon to see men and women of all age categories above the age of 21 competing. It is exciting to walk the room on Day 6 of the $10,000 buy-in Main Event and see who remains and there is always a couple of competitors aged 70+ remaining in the field still in contention playing for the bracelet and the $10million+ up top. What is truly amazing is the fact that this means they have been playing 12-hour days for 6 days straight by this point a total of 72 hours and have typically outlasted 9,000+ other players to make it to that point in the tournament. This is a remarkable feat of mental endurance and exhaustion.
Obviously, some of us such as myself had a heart condition that prevented me from continuing my passion for running. However, my heart condition also saved my life because if I was not a runner I would never have known about the blockage that almost took my life.
