On November 14, 1965. men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry (Custer's unit) led by Colonel Hal Moore, landed at LZ X-Ray, in the shadow of the Chu Pong Massif in the Ia Drang Valley of South Vietnam, hard against the Cambodian border.
Over 4 days members of this unit and another which walked to LZ Albany would fight and die, in the first large scale engagement between American troops and the People's Army of Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
234 American soldiers died during the 4 days of conflict - 11/14 - 11/18/1965.
The battle was later memorilized through the movie We Were Soldiers (2002).
