Bobby Kersee is irate about the 2028 Olympic track schedule. Will it/Should it be changed for SML?

Why should they cater to a specific athlete

Why would they not?

Because that is good for the sport!

I questioned whether SML and Bobby even wanted to try it, but if he's upset my guess is they were atleast considering it.

Our sport is dying, and stars help bring it attention. Winning multiple medals makes stars.

The IOC and the Swimming group bent over backwards for Phelps to win all his medals. World Athletics and USATF need to fight for their stars.

That's OK. A lot of people are irate about the way Bobby Kersee ruined Athing Mu.

SML is one of the biggest icon of track right now, market her when she's still in her prime breaking records and winning golds

By 2028 SML will unlikely be able to win Gold in any event. People don’t realize that time doesn’t stand still. Sydney will be almost 29 and past her prime.

Awwww poor Bobby Kersee. Not going to get much sympathy around here after ruining Athing Mu.

Interesting that they bring up Michael Johnson. Pretty much the same thing happened to him. He requested a change of schedule and the USOC said no. Then he went out and won the 400 and 200 at the world championships in 1995. That got everyone’s attention, and ISOC changed the schedule for him.

What Sydney needs to do is prove she can run and win both races at a Worlds or something like it. If she makes the case with her feet, I am confident the Los Angeles organizers will change the schedule. but complaining about it in public doesn’t help.

I’ll never understand why they can figure out a schedule that accommodates all reasonable doubles. 10k and 1500 early, 800 and 5k late, marathon last, for example. 800/1500, 1500/5k, 5k/10k, and 10k/marathon all made realistic. Do likewise with sprints, keep the 400 and 400 hurdles early and the 4x4’s late. I swear back in the day the schedule took this kind of stuff into consideration, but recent Ganes have just thrown events around in ways that don’t make sense.

If she’s that good she won’t need external assistance

I'd prefer she focuses on the 400 and wipe this woman from the record books.

Athing Mu ruined Athing Mu.

Athing Mu was hated more when she was winning than when she was losing round here.

They are doing it now for Ledecky. That was the parallel conversation on swimming forums today. Ledecky's best event is 800 meter freestyle. She has a chance to win the gold medal for the historic 5th consecutive Olympics in Los Angeles. But Ledecky will be well past her prime in 2028 and a chief obstacle is Summer McIntosh, currently the best female swimmer in the world and potentially the best ever.

McIntosh recently devoted greater emphasis to the 800 and came very close to Ledecky's world record. She is expected to break that world record before 2028.

So what does Los Angeles do? The schedule the women's 800 final immediately following the women's 200 butterfly final on the final night of swimming. Back to back. There's not even a men's race in between. Completely outrageous. The 200 butterfly is McIntosh's favorite event. It was the event her mother swam in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In other words, there is 0% chance that McIntosh will bypass that event in 2028. They are clearing the deck for Katie Ledecky, beyond anyone's cynical expectations.

Yeah, there's another top contender in Lani Pallister. Irrelevant. The math completely changes with McIntosh absent and whoever made this schedule was fully aware of that.

Why can't she still do the double? I don't know what the schedule is but even if there are both right on the same day baseball players play the ladders.

I am skeptical that Sydney was intending to do both events. If Bobby’s serious about this they can do it in 2027 at Worlds and appeal for a schedule change. I’d hope they’d make the change in that case. Until then, we can’t ignore that theres a bit of a credibility issue here. No double in 2023-5 when that was the plan after 2022 seemingly. Let’s not forget the times Sydney is headlining a meet only not to show up. Bobby also said Mu would be doing an 800/1500 double by LA and we see how that’s going…
