We are actually at 38 Trillion now. Trump added a trillion dollars worth of debt in 2025. Despite DOGE and many attempts to cut federal spending, the federal government still spent 1 trillion dollars more than it took in. This is because gutting all the programs has actually had the unintended yet foreseeable consequence of increasing spending to replace what was lost. The other problem is numerous other programs like the ACA, Medicare, SS, and others cost 100s of billions to maintain while the government is receiving record low revenues. This is due to the corporate and wealthy tax cuts in the Republican’s big beautiful bill. The government shutdown is adding billions to the debt each day it goes on because of a loss of productivity. So thank Trump for not only cutting thousands of necessary government jobs, lowering taxes on the rich, preventing SNAP recipients from eating, and jeopardizing our national security by not paying the troops… but also adding another trillion dollars to the debt.

The OP is trying to be sarcastic. I know that is lost on some of you. The reality is we need more tax revenue and tariffs are part of that solution. We also need spending cuts, which Trump has delivered as well. It’s why the deficit is shrinking (which the rate cuts Democrats are also opposing have helped as well). I like tariffs because everyone pays them. It’s easy to spend other people’s money (the whole tax the rich movement). Honestly, if Democrats won’t restore the government without Obamacare subsidies, the solution is simple: a healthcare tariff. This congress you all hold so sacred (that was running $2 trillion annual deficits during Biden’s Administration) can use their power of the purse to pass an import tax that touches every American (not just the 50% who actually pay federal income tax) and they can pay for the Obamacare subsidies. It’s only $425 per American each year to cover the $140 billion in subsidies.

So that 425 dollars is a lot for a poor person. I know that people like you who have had money their lives don’t understand that, but it is. Your import tax as part of the plan you suggest is a terrible idea. It would raise taxes for the poorest Americans who cannot even afford groceries, rent, and gasoline as it is. And that still wouldn’t cover the affordable care act subsidies, so it wouldn’t matter. And who holds Congress sacred? I’m pretty sure every normal person hates Congress.

Tariffs don’t work. Any revenue that is gained from them is offset by the prices that they raise for consumer goods and food, which hurts the bottom 40% of income earners the most. Trump’s tariffs have largely caused inflation harm to most Americans. They were a horrible idea to begin with.

In terms of, to quote you, using other people’s money, that is how every civilized society since Antiquity has been able to function properly. If you can’t levy taxes, then you can’t fund even the most basic public needs. You on the Right are largely misinformed on this idea. I agree that you should not tax the rich at an unreasonable amount. 90% in the 40s and 50s was too high and lead to unemployment and inflation due to high product demand with slower manufacturing production. But what the rich pay now at less than 30% is far too low, even when you account for capital gains taxes and corporate taxes. A 50% income tax wouldn’t harm a billionaire in the slightest, and the surplus tax revenue could be used to create a cleaner better society that the billionaires would enjoy living in, rather than a crime ridden dangerous one. So the billionaires win by paying more taxes.

Get rid of The Fed and almost all of the debt disappears. But the people who run The Fed and print our money don’t want that. Look up fiat money, learn how it works.

You ever wonder how “certain people” seem to have access to funds out nowhere, how they seem to be able to live well above their means? How they “somehow” get the dollars to start or buy businesses? That has a lot to do with it. These same people feel you are supposed to be in eternal debt to them. Look up who owns most of the banks that own The Fed.

The Federal Reserve is not federal and it has no reserves. And they want the US to continue the slow slide to the bottom- when it crashes they believe they can run somewhere else and do it again as they did to Russia (they founded the USSR and ran it into the ground), as they did to the countries in the old Eastern Bloc (and they are now trying to get back in, to do it again). This is one of the reasons they back Ukraine, they want that nation so they can do the same. Sounds wild but it’s easily researchable. They are literally human locusts.

The only way to get responsible spending is if everybody has a buy in. Otherwise, those who pay nothing will vote for unlimited spending.
