Read the title. To me, it looks like he traded getting the American record in a stronger field for winning his first major. I know he could've won this without a doubt in my mind.

He would have beat a 2:02 marathoner on a harder course? Nah.

Yes, the same way 16 runners beat a 2:01 marathoner today. On the day, in this same race, Conner Mantz would have won.

That’s a pretty bad analogy. Your 2:01 marathoner is about a 2:15 one now.
As another poster pointed out, Kipruto has run 2:02 and Mutiso is almost 1:30 faster than Mantz over the HM.
And if we always decided races by PBs Jimmy Gressier wouldn’t be a gold or bronze medalist. Your analogy is flawed. This was a race, not a time trial. Conner Mantz’s Chicago effort would have won this race today.

Kipruto is a far more experienced and accomplished marathoner with a faster PB, who also ran Chicago faster than Mantz, who set his PB there.
But yeah, sure, there’s no doubt Mantz would have won today.
The Kenyans race themselves and other runners. Conor is a great runner but nearly all of his road races have basically been time trials. He said it himself after Chicago. He sticks to his methodical plan/pace and it's just a matter of fact what place that gets. The NY course is brutal for time trial runners.

Connor did the right thing, the AR was too old and we needed a sub 2:05 AR.

My best guess is that Mantz will run Boston again next spring, and this time he will really go for the win or the podium without fear of blowing up. Like his first Boston but he’s in better shape now obviously.

I think Boston was more of a race, and the result would’ve been similar here except he could’ve podiumed (he can beat Korir). Kipruto/Mutiso crushed the last 5 miles and while Conner has shown those finishing chops in his halves/10Ks we haven’t seen it yet in his marathons. Unlocking it is key to getting on the podium and even winning in any non-watered down major.

Did he not go for a podium spot at Boston last time? He looked like that was what he was pushing for, and just didn't have quite enough left in him at the end

Perhaps he did, but he said the only reason he didn’t go with Korir is he didn’t want to risk blowing up. Now he’s really got nothing to lose.

then that's the dumbest thing a runner ever did in their entire career.
He could not have won. Here's the thing--the Kenyans and Ethiopians do just enough to win, especially on courses where times or world records are not a factor. Results like this might make it seem like guys like Mantz have a shot, but you're comparing apples to oranges. If Mantz ran it, they would've done what they needed to beat him. Simple as that.
The top comment is obviously ragebait but I was talking with someone earlier today and we both agreed, if you were ever going to win a major marathon today was probably the day. Not that Kipruto and Mutiso aren't good because of course they are, but the field felt really gettable. 2:08 is not a super fast time for this course. Patrick Dever got 4th, like that's what kind of a day today was.
I think in the future on say Olympic or WC years, NYC will be a gettable major because people want to run faster marathons for the fast times, these championship style marathons are not as popular as they used to be. The fields are getting very diluted, with adding Sydney as well to the fall calendar. From a pure time perspective, Meb was never supposed to win a major, but you really just need the right day, comes down to who covers the moves and how the kick goes at the end.
