Japan's premier race, hakone evidence, allows 1 foreigner per team. They are the same way for many other University and pro competition. It keeps competition very competitive while making sure Japanese athletes can race and develop. Something like this could be really good for the NCAA. Why isn't there a foreigner cap for teams in d1? Not saying eliminate them completely or not let these people have opportunities.

maybe not even 1 per team. 2 could work quite well too. Anything but straight through bought roster

Several runners that have and are capable of beating mantz. They are just a little bit behind in some areas

Whenever the NCAA has tried to restrict foreign athletes they've lost court challenges. And it doesn’t seem as if coaches from other sports have much interest in such restrictions.

heck what is the US versus Japans marathon medal count in the past 30 years?
If the goal is to develop 2:10 guys, the US system sucks. If the goal is to win medals, Japan is a total failure…

That's because most of our top runners are still truly competitive on the track in 5000/10000, and then a smaller number of top people try the marathon. Japan has only had 7 total medals this century in olympics or world championships for 5k/10k/marathon. All of them in the marathon, 6 were women's marathon only 1 men's marathon. The US has won more olympic medals than that, and then takes the lead by a lot when adding up world championship medals. The US has waaaaaaay more fast 10,000m and 5,000m runners. Japan can have all their 2:08/2:09 guys who can't break 2:10 anywhere outside Japanese soil.

US won 26 medals at Tokyo worlds, 16 gold. Japan won 2 bronze.
It's funny about how people here go on and on about how we need to fix track and field in this country when we're completely dominant in it.
("Oh, but distance is what matters!" the letsrunners cry! We won medals in the men's 10k, 5k, steeple, and 1500(2) at the last Olympics.)

The post I was responding to was talking about japanese men, but switch 25 to 20 and it will apply to the women too, depending on how the world champs marathon is viewed

Realistically, its because if we did, we'd be called racist. Every other nation is allowed to enforce things like borders, laws, and national identity. If the US does it, we're called (insert foreign group here)-phobic.

I think most people here would barely prefer watching steeple to WNBA. It's the track event for people neither fast nor strong enough for the 1500 or 5000.
