We're looking to compile a list of schools/coaches that actually develop hs runners. So not the schools that took STUDS and then they run well...schools that took mid-pack, good runners and developed them.
Looking for schools across ALL divisions, if you or someone you know had a good experience - name the school/coach here.
Are XC programs actually big enough enough that you can tell whether coaches develop runners better (or worse) than average or if they just luck into more than the average numbers of runners who can run higher mileage and keep improving without injuries?
penalizing schools for recruiting well is weird. The best programs recruit well and develop runners. You're just looking for schools that can't recruit well.

not punishing them(?) huh? I'm just looking for schools for hs kids to develop at. Some schools only take you if you are already a star.
There are a lot of hs programs where the kids are really undertrained, so I'm looking for programs that take chances on kids and develop them. The area I live in currently just throws whatever teacher in the xc coach role, whether they know ANYTHING about the sport or not...it's just a boost in their pension. There are some schools in our area that kids have great coaches and have a much better trajectory.

Villanova develops talent pretty well. Yes they get good kids, but they have a good track record of development. Helps when you have a consistent coach and not a coaching change every 3-5 years.
THAT's what we should be looking at too. What colleges have coaches that will stay the whole time an athlete is on the team?

It is not a given by any stretch that a stud in high school will continue to develop and do well in college. A good coach is needed to develop any runner.
How many “mid-pack” guys do you think actually get recruited? Those guys are probably walking on to any program they join.

Markezich defied odds of one in thousands to go from walk-on to NCAA champion. She went from 25-30 MPW in HS to 60+ in college so that had something to do with it.
UW-Lacrosse has gone to recruiting and getting dudes who would have gone to Oregon/CU/Stanford just 5 years ago
It will be interesting to see how the chips fall at the conference meet. You could argue UWP, UWSP, UWEC, and UWO have built a stronger reputation for developing mid-tier recruits this year. I agree, the WIAC generally showcases well-developed runners across the board.

The WIAC is good at developing its runners partly because its runners are underdeveloped. The rules for high school athletics in Wisconsin severely limit the out of season opportunities for runners.

To qualify under the premise of this thread, you probably need at least 5 examples of runners far exceeding their recruitment expectation.
For example, Wayment, Orton, Chamberlain, Corrigan, and Rooks
D2 is really overlooked for some great programs that develop talent. Some good ones include Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Christian, and Northwest Missouri State. Grand Valley State and Adams State also develop a lot of talent, however, they have very high rates of runners burning out and getting injured all the time before quitting.
