I'm sure that's the last thing on his mind. He actually has a real full time job now and can run for fun unlike other ex pros that have no way to make money other to be yet another trainer out there in an oversaturated market.

As a mortal, it bothers me that an elite miler can just jump to an event 26x farther and be better than 90% (or more?) of marathoners. Mile really is more aerobic than we think.

Centro also ran 13:00 for 5000m. It's not like he was an 800/mile guy. Would you be surprised if Cole Hocker could run a 2:22? It's a very mediocre time for guys at that talent level. I'm sure if Centro actually went all-in on marathon training when he was at his peak he'd at least be able to hit the sub-2:16 Trials standard.

letsrun posters continue to have no idea how fast collegiate/post-collegiate athletes are. a 2:22 marathon is far, far, far less than 1% of all people who run marathons (even if you restrict that number just to men). I would guess at least four to five 0's after the 0.decimal

WHAT? Centro at almost 36 years old can still likely run 3:40 for 1500, and most who can run 3:40 could run 2:22 if they do a bit of mileage. Centro was a 1:44, 3:30 and 13:00 runner, so his talent was immense. You shouldn’t be bothered by this.

This is the point I have tried to make here for 20 years.
The kid who wins 400 at grade school field day, wins 600 in presidents test in gym, and runs xc, 400, 800, mile, 2 mile in high school...
...is going to be good in road 10k, half, and marathon when they get around to it.
The talent gene is for distance running, not some random specific distance.
I agree with some other posters that it's great that he's staying involved. It's hard to think of other Olympic 1500m gold medalists who might try this, and it's hard to see that there would be much for him to gain by doing it. So, kudos for (apparently) just doing it for fun.

Although he wasn’t an Olympic gold medalist, miler Steve Holman raced a marathon after his track career ended.
this is the most idiotic take. he CONTROLLED that race like a masterclass due to his racing acumen, guts, and aerobic strength and speed. Hocker picked up the scraps in 2024, Centro controlled the race start to finish.

This is gonna be a hard one for the letsrun crowd to process, but a 2:22 marathon is better than 99.99% of marathoners.
