Hi everyone,
I’m 38 years old, male, 171 cm, BMI ≈ 21.6. My all-time best for 5000m is 16:15, but that was six years ago (2019) when I was averaging about 35 miles per week for 6-7 months. I’ve never trained with high mileage. Right now, I’m in around 19:00 shape after several years of not running at all, and my long-term goal is to run 15:30 for 5K by August 2027, when I turn 40. Ideally, I’d like to be competitive in my age group.
I’m considering spending the entire first year doing only easy running, gradually building mileage and consistency before introducing any structured workouts. Something like: Start at 10 mpw and build up slowly toward 50 mpw.
My question is: Would taking a full year away from intervals, tempos, and race-pace work make me too slow, or is it the right way to build a strong aerobic foundation for long-term progress?
Has anyone here tried a “no-speed” base year?
How much sharpness did you lose, and how quickly did it come back?
Thanks in advance for any insights.
