Adams State, under coach Damon Martin, has obviously had some fantastic foreign athletes over the years. He still develops those athletes. Romain Legendre came as a 13:35 guy, which is obviously fast. But 13:35 down to 13:02 in two years is far, far from a slow and/or expected progression. Many coaches couldn’t get that right. That aside, I’ll stick to the premise of developing American kids.
Some have mistakenly overstated Adams State’s reliance on foreign talent. Have there been years that foreign talent pulled most of the weight? Of course. But Martin has developed many American kids at Adams from middling HS runners to certified heavy hitters.
Also, just because a kid isn’t named John Smith or Charlie Stevens it doesn’t mean he’s not American. Names and skin colors don’t determine citizenship. I don’t think most people would do this, but I think some have assumed certain Adams State runners are foreign over the years for this (bad) reason. Not hard to look someone up on world athletics to see their citizenship.
Some might not know that Sydney Gidabuday (7:54/13:29 in college pre- super spike) was born in and grew up in California and is an American citizen.
Awet Beraki (13:36/28:12) was born in Eritrea. He was once held hostage for ransom for a matter of months, you can read more on this online. He moved to America as a preteen or young teen and is an American citizen. Ran 14:38/30:05 before coming to Adams State after a brief stint at Stephen F Austin and a year at a juco.
Kidus Begashaw (7:53/13:40) has Ethiopian parents but grew up in Aurora, CO. American citizen. Ran 4:34/9:48 in HS. Has remaining eligibility.
Juan Rosales, from California, 14:56/31:30 during his two years at a juco, now 13:49 and a 30:08 10k at 4500ft. Has remaining eligibility.
Julian Campos, from Washington, 14:29 during his two years at a juco, now 7:58/13:56. Has remaining eligibility.
Max Aldrich, 14:15 during his two years at a DIII, now 13:59. Has remaining eligibility.
Dayton Brown, from Michigan. 13:58/29:32 at Saginaw Valley (DII), ran 13:32/28:08 at Adams.
David Cardenas, from Colorado, ran 1:53/4:16 in HS then 1:47.5 and a 4:01 mile at Adams.
Miguel Coca, from New Mexico, ran 1:56/4:24 in HS then 3:56.38 mile, 7:44, and 13:36 at Adams.
Those are all very recent history, you can also look into Tabor Stevens, Jovanny Godinez, Ryan McNiff, Dan Maas, Aaron Braun, Aucencio Martinez, Mario Macias, Jason Hubbard, Brian Medigovich, Matt Daniels, Elias Geydon, Carson Bix, and many more. I don’t believe I mentioned anyone who was coached by Vigil, that’s all Martin. Vigil had some super studs in the likes of Pat Porter, Rick Robirds and others. Those two guys both ran slower than 10:00 in the two mile in HS.
All of this is without even considering the women’s side.
Martin and Adams state have been developing kids well, both Americans and foreigners, for years.
