I'm heading down I-95 on Friday and should be hitting the clusterf*ck of Baltimore/Washington/NoVa around lunchtime. Would those experienced with the joys of this drive suggest using the Beltways, or is it worth the risk to try to shoot straight through the cities on 95 itself?

damn yo, thats rough...the problem with washington is that 95 is the beltway, and its horrible
so DC is going to be worse than baltimore, baltimore is not too bad, definatly take 95 through the city rather than the beltway...the only bad thing with that is you have to pay a toll (~$2). But its definatly better than freakin going around the baltimore beltway. So just stay on 95 the whole way i'd say, and hope you don't catch bad luck in DC.
Thanks. Didn't realize that 95 is the beltway in DC. Is it 295 that's the Anacostia or B-W Parkway or whatever it's called once it changes names? Is that useful, or should I just do the East side of the DC Beltway?

You'll be fine on the Beltway. The real problem will heading south on I-95 once you leave the beltway (i.e., heading towards Richmond). There's no way around that, unfortunately.
Lunch time should be fine through B'more and DC, but as the last guy said, once you hit VA, good luck. Depending on how far south you are going, you could shoot down the Eastern Shore and use the Bay Bridge/Tunnel.
Your problems won't be in Maryland, its Virginia that sucks ass.

When headed through Baltimore, take the Harbor Tunnel (I-895) instead of the Key Tunnel (I-95).
Then take the Baltimore-Washington Pkway (MD-295) south. That will take you onto the east side of DC, where the road turns into I-295. It will end @ I-495 (Washington Beltway) and the Wilson Bridge, which will be traffic, but that should be the only traffic you hit.
Cross the Wilson Bridge, stay on I-495 until you see signs for I-95 South (~ 5 miles).
That's the most direct route and the one that will have the least traffic. Only suckers stay on I-95 and cross into Va north of DC. That will take forever.
