I sort of agree with you here.
I was up watching live this morning, the 100 hurdles had just finished and "all attention was on Mondo and if he could break the WR" - honestly, I closed the browser. Went and had a coffee and some toast came back and saw on the WA results page he jumped a WR. Cool.
And I love track and field, but there is no doubt the "specialness" of this particular record just really isn't there at all anymore. 14 WR's in the last 5 years and all of them by one cm.
By comparison we've seen two WRs in the mens 1500m in the last 30 years. After the exciting period in the late 90's where the 5000m WR bounced between Komen and Geb, we've seen two WR's in that event since the turn of the century as well.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a dig against the talent of Mondo and his stardom. And if PUMA are stupid enough to have WR bonus in there for every single WR or even just a massive bonus amount like track athletes have because records are so hard to break, then more fool them. But they are are 3 billion dollar company, they will be fine.
BTW This situation has happened before on the womens side with Yelena Isanbaeva. She set 11 WR's over the space of 8 years but at least she started going up by 2 and 3cm increments at a point. I know adidas eventually put something in her contract where a WR bonus was capped on a yearly basis because they basically found out she had cleared 5m in training so knew she could do it, and was just bleeding the WR out. Who knows if Mondo has the same situation now?
