Press conference at world champs with Usain Bolt said he could have run 9.42 seconds in super spikes? What does super spikes even mean? Can someone do the math on this one? No shot the best of the best could knock that much off. At least he’s right about Lyles not being able to break it either…
The study just discusses the time drop associated with the average increase in running economy with new MARATHON supershoes. So whatever sh1tty news site this is assumes usain is running in pumas latest super racer. Don't spread this garbage.
Furthermore the study was done with 15 total people (11m, 4w). This is less than half of the generally accepted statistically significant n=32.
the athletes were required to be under 19:00 5k for men, and 21:00 for women. Tests were done between 7:45 pace and 6:00 pace, for 5min.
the study was done by a guy who works for Puma, and another guy who received grants from puma. Shockingly, they found the puma prototype to be the best shoe!
Sadly, they have no clue why the puma was the best. They note differences in mass, stiffness, and energy return, but because shoes differed in multiple ways simultaneously, it’s not possible to isolate which factors caused the improvement.
Tl;Dr
Puma shoes are best for 19min 5k runners in puma funded studies.
His kids are not showing any talent yet. Did he shoot his shot right?
”I’ve always hoped that maybe one of my kids, my boys, will do track and field,” he said. “I don’t know. They’re not showing any talent yet. Hopefully, they’ll get better, we’ll see.”

Yes. If usain ran in pumas prototype marathon super shoe, according to a study funded by puma, he would run 9.42.
Bolt, who is in Tokyo to present the medals for the 100m final at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday, said he was not surprised with the findings. “I fully agree with it,” he said. “Because one athlete that continued after I retired was Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and she got faster with the new spikes. I probably would have run way faster with them too.” The study was conducted by Wouter Hoogkamer and his colleagues at the University of Massachusetts, who conducted research on the original Nike Vaporfly super shoes in 2016 and have since analysed leading shoes from all the major brands. Hoogkamer and his team were contacted by Puma, who funded a study into what Bolt might have achieved if his size-13 spikes had come armed with bouncy foam and a carbon plate. Their 21-page study, using data from 15 athletes and a series of complex equations, makes the case that the Jamaican would have been considerably quicker.
Isn't the Hookkamer the same guy who told us Faith would break 4:00 with better rabbits? ;)

Rojo. You clearly didn’t read the study at all.
That quote is a direct lie. The study shows that the puma marathon shoe has higher running economy than other shoes tested (alpha fly, the adidas one, and I think one more I’m forgetting.)

Garbage indeed. My bad for not reading the study before posting.
Just goes to show how much of an aid the cheater super shoes really are. There's absolutely no denying it, yet a lot of people here try to downplay it. It's useless, people are really starting to understand just how significant the cheater shoes are to the fast times we see now.

Hocker 7:22 is a literal joke. LOL
There hasn't been a strong study analyzing the effect on RE for the super spikes.

A husky looking short skater punk running 3000 meters in 7:22 is all the data you need, dummy.

First he ran 7:23 and get real. He is the Olympic champion in the 1500 who took the effort to focus on his endurance. New spikes aren't shaving off 7 seconds per mile off an elite runners time unless your comparing to 1950s spikes. Maybe 1 second compared to the Jasari or Ventulas.
Honestly, I do think 2008 Beijing Bolt would be around very high 9.4 in super-spikes. He already would have run somewhere in the mid to low 9.5s had he not pulled up 30 meters early.
This is primarily a distance running forum so I think a lot of people don't get how much this new generation of sprint spikes helps. The Nike foam alone in those things gives tremendous energy return, far better than anything they had in 2008 - and that's not even mentioning the carbon plate or anything.
That run was quite possibly the best 100m ever run from a pure speed standpoint. Was superior to his 2009 run for sure.
