I would like some input on an iron test I took yesterday and just got the results for. After feeling tired/weak running for a few months I decided to do the Quest Direct To Consumer tests of Iron and CBC.
Background: I was coming out of injury this spring, got to 50mpw in April and ran two 6min pace 5ks then started the 3x sub-t workouts in May until June 22nd while building to 60mpw, during that time my workouts got slower and slower and race times regressed. (6/15 19:22 5k, 7/7 30:49 5M, 7/19 19:45 5k). I was also feeling more tired in general. I started taking a low dose of iron 4-5 days/week on June 28th, cut my mileage for a few weeks (35-40 mpw) with only 1 workout/wk then ive been back up to 50-60mpw with some still slow 5ks (8/7 19:07, 8/21 19:02) and 1-2 workouts/wk.
For reference I've ran 16:56 5k/2:43M before or 17:2x/2:46 more recently and my hours of activity (run/bike/swim, mostly running) the last three years has been 435, 441, 531, so 60mpw is nothing and I haven't been swimming/biking during this time. I'm not a vegetarian but am on a low meat diet, plenty of dark greens (or apparently not).
My results are below, the CBC showed all normal levels, the ferritin was low but the total iron and % saturation were both high. From some sleuthing I suspect that the total iron and saturation represent my recent iron levels but the ferritin shows long term trend and that it would have been lower than 26 when I started taking iron but has been increasing. I am looking for some direction and whether to keep taking a low does of iron every day or every other day, plus for how long. I do not have a doctor, yes I know I need one that isn't LetsRun.
