To say her 1983 Kinney race was a really good effort is an understatement. She won the race by over 30 seconds and beat Cathy Schiro who nearly made the Olympic team in the marathon a few months later (4th at 24 miles eventually fading to 9th). she also beat Suzy Favor and Sylvia Mosqueda both would have successful professional running careers. Hard to imagine the course was as short as you say.
Her son Michael is an 8:24 steeplechaser. May she have peace.
Is it normal to say rest in peace to people who enter hospice care?

I didn’t say she should rest in peace. Peace be with you. Peace is not a word which has only one meaning.

You may want to take a sensitivity course.
Maybe I missed it among all the pedantic nerd chat about course measurement, but what's her terminal condition?
God bless her. I hope she's comfortable.
Wonderful runner and human being, very sorry to hear this. I believe she did a lot for the sport while living in Illinois in recent years. Hope some who know her can elaborate on her life.
In addition to being an amazing athlete, Janet was a phenomenal mentor. She ran a girls’ running camp, Sub5, in Illinois for 20 years, between 1997 and 2017. Her enthusiasm, knowledge, and love for the sport left an indelible mark on the girls that came through. There are countless women out there who credit Janet with having influenced their life for the better because of their experiences at that camp. She will be deeply missed by so many.
Only on LRC could I go to a post on a very good runner going into Hospice Care and then have to read people complaining that a time she ran 42 years ago was on a short course. It didn't matter 42 years ago and it doesnt matter now.
I remember once she wrote a very detailed analysis on how to run Holmdel Park and I came away with the impression she was a very intelligent person. This news hits hard not only because 59 is a very young age, but also because I am in the same generation of hers and it shows that none of us are invincible.
I will Pray for her and send good vibes to her Family.
I was lucky enough to have met Janet Smith. I even worked as a camp counselor at her camp one year. She is a great person who inspired and continues to inspire many girls to be their best selves. I'm very sorry to hear this news and I hope she knows she's made a positive impact on so many others during her time here.
