The primary purpose of government, when all is said and done, is to protect property.
It follows logically that property taxes should be the primary funding source for government.
As a result, it is clear that property taxes are WAY too low. If there were a practical way of doing so, income taxes, tariffs and sales taxes would all go away and be replaced by property taxes.
Here, I am using property to include all property, not just real estate.

Sales and income tax are also less stable. During a recession, they can drop quickly for a year or two. Property taxes generally don't do that, providing a level of stability for core government services.
There are other methods to give property tax relief, such as locking the assessed value for homes for people over the age of 65, for example.
So how you are supposed to get schools and bridges financed?
School Admins where I live get paid $250,000 per year. In addition, they get $100,000s worth of benefits in the form of the best health insurance plans and pension programs.

the only nice thing we get for property taxes is that they will pick up branches/trees on the side of the road.
we could realistically cut the total property taxes in half and we would be ok. Make up the difference in sales tax, because the rest is wasteful and evil quite frankly.

Bingo. Somebody here understands economic motivations. Trump has already cut the corporate tax rate twice, once in each term; DeSantis is going after property taxes; and the GOP is floating the idea of abolishing estate taxes.
Meanwhile, taxes paid by ordinary Americans are rising due to tariffs. And the GOP isn't lowering their income-tax brackets, as the party did for corporations.
Middle-class voters are supporting policies that don't help them, but which do help the very wealthy. That's the reality.

And they also will send a ambulance or police car to your house if you have an emergency. Little more critical item than picking up branches
Some would argue that the 250K for a school admin is a sweet deal because a company the size of the schools would make FAR more. So, yeah, let's slash property taxes and gut public schools. New private schools would have to fill the void and the people running the private schools will make a lot more BUT you'll never know because their private salaries won't be easily public. At least with public schools you knew what you were paying for and have a say at public meetings. In the coming private system, you'll be stuck as an individual -- seems powerful until it's not. Enjoy the magic of the market!
