Herrera hails from Madera, a Central California city, with an 80% Hispanic population. The high school there has produced, over decades, former NFL greats, and Lee Evans, Olympic 400 champ and record holder from 1968.

I think Herrera's connection to Mexico is through his parents or grandparents.

Herrera has really leveled up this year. He's improved his 3k PB from 7:40 to 7:33, and he's lowered his 5k PB from 13:11 to 12:58. Can he unseat Grijalva for the title of current best Latin American distance runner? Probably not, but it's worth noting their 5k SB is only 0.01 apart. Of course, Grijalva is coming back from injury and steadily regaining his form. Looking forward to their clash at the Lausanne DL!
