Massive Hobbs fan here. He's been terrific, but it was tough to hear him interviewed after finishing 4th @ USATF Championships and express frustration that he could not have done anything better to prepare. I tend to agree with him and think he's on an upward trajectory. Lots of great Americans in the mile, and the order could have been different on any given day. However, if there is one area where he could prepare more, it would be his aerobic base. If his only long run is seven miles, then he is at a disadvantage relative to the rest of the field. I think that shows in his kick, which is not a function of pure speed (he's one of the best 800 guys) but his strength. Since Hobbs is reticent to do long runs of more than 7 miles for fear of injury, he could benefit from doing long "runs" through alternative means like Zero Runner, Elliptical Machine, or Elliptigo. He could get in a 90-120 minute aerobic workout without any joint pounding. Even doing easy "runs" on one of these would give him relief and let him build up his base.
