Does anyone know how many spots are in the DL final in Zurich specifically for the men’s 5k? is it 10 or 12?

"At each of the 14 series meetings, athletes are awarded 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for ranking 1st to 8th respectively. The top six in the field events, top eight for 100m-800m and the top ten for 1500m and long distance events will qualify for the Final. In each discipline, one athlete may also qualify via national or global wildcard."

Has Keely not raced the 800 this season? Has she been injured or something?

Very excited to see Fisher and Blanks run another 5k. We never have guys competitive in the DL and now suddenly we’ve got 3 guys capable of 12:4x mid (maybe faster for Fisher). Also Grijalva in there coming off his 12:58 the other day. He’s not normally a factor in super fast races, but his 3rd at Worlds a few years ago shows he’s got the talent to be competitive.

mens 800 absolutely loaded as well. Hoppel and Hoey from the US, plus Wanyonyi, Arop, Burton, Tual, Attaoui, and Masalela for 8 sub-1:43 sb guys. Both 800 fields are just absolutely nasty, maybe better than the WC final (although Brazier and Lutkenhaus aren’t in it, so maybe not quite as deep as the Women’s, but still insane).

BTW, there are 23 entries in the 5000. No mention of two flights. Is this for real, or are the organizers counting on a bunch of whereabouts failures between now and the 20th?

Keely has not races since the Olympic final but is scheduled to open her season on Saturday in Silesia. Much weaker 800m field there (not a Diamond evet). Nowe and Caldwell are probably her biggest threats there.

I noticed that as well. That’s too many and I am guessing there are a lot of tentative entries. Don’t think this will be two heats but who knows. Oslo has 16, Paris had 15, and Monaco had 13.

There’s only time for one heat. Suspecting two pacers are Akbache and Jude Thomas. Maybe Fayisa? There are a fair number of athletes who will go straight to the back: Rayner, Raess, Filip, Fay. So who knows maybe it will string out enough but the field is massive.

The W 3000SC features Doris Lemngole and Norah Jeruto up top, both of whom should contend for bronze in Tokyo next month. The Lausanne race likely will not feature the sort of Markezich/Lemngole rematch fans of the two ON athletes once anticipated, but seeing both race well would tide us over nicely.

Expect good things from Elise Thorner who has made a marked performance jump since her Gator days and, like Kaylee Mitchell, looks to sharpen up ahead of Worlds.

Also keep an eye on Alemnat Walle, the 19 yr old phenom who splashed onto the scene at last month's Pre Classic when she hung with Jennings and Bouzayani to finish in 9:06

Noah Lyles against Kishane Thompson is going to be the fan and media focus of this meet. Their first meeting since Paris.

Thompson has never beaten Lyles. They've only met twice. Both races were very tight in Lyles' favor.

Women's steeplechase is weak by Diamond League standards. It might keep the Americans on screen longer than usual, unless Jeruto wants to practice a solo breakaway.

Anna Hall doing the high jump. Makes sense for her because the technical events are high value in the heptathlon. If she can keep pace with Thiam in that event the totality should fall her way. Hall cleared 1.95 at Gotzis and 1.90 at trials

Seth OD needs to get into this race.

Downside to not being repped by Nic. Probably see Ramsden in it before Seth.

Nic likely keeping Seth out of the race to avoid him beating his athletes.

Actually, Noah and Kishane are both racing four days before Lausanne at the Silesia meet on the 16th. We'll get to see them face each other twice in a span of less than a week! Of course, there are others who could win, such as Kenny at Silesia and Oblique in Lausanne.

I'm not convinced Thiam will be challenging for the gold here. Hall's nearest challenger will likely be KJT.

Unless disaster strikes, this really is Hall's to loose this time round. She has shown some vulnerability in the LJ, as well as 200m, but those are the only 2 events that KJT will realistically beat her in. Maybe the JT, but not significantly.

I'm thinking a 6900 from Hall, a 6650 to 6700 for KJT, and 6600 to 6650 for Thiam, if she starts/finishes.

World #1 Mary Moraa has scratched the 800m

Her season has really gone downhill since Stockholm two months ago. Last 7 races:

Moraa needed to place about 5th or higher to have a chance for the DL Final; obviously, she is eliminated now.
