As far as I'm concerned, the women go out too fast in the 400m. They are all dying with 150m to go. Few ran well in that race - including Sydney. When your last 100s are so much slower than your first and second 100s, it negatively affects overall time. Watch Paulino run it; she doesn't split like that. Don't get me started on the women's 800m pacing. Compared to men, the women go out too fast.

Paulino goes out *faster* than that. She went out in 22.81 for 48.17 last year in Paris. She just doesn't do that on the circuit because she aims to peak at the championships.

She’ll need to go out that fast to win at Worlds, and then she’ll need to close faster. So this was a good stepping stone to Worlds.

Ideally she would have figured out the open 400m by now, but since she's got more learning to do, maybe she'll enter another meet before Worlds ? Would be a nice side effect.
Sydney-McLaughlin Levrone 48.90 FTW - can we all admit that's a little disappointing?
Of course her 48.90 was disappointing. Sydney herself was disappointed. She wanted the break the American record. Oh well, I think she'll get that record later this year.
Admittedly, she has set a very high bar but I was underwhelmed by that. She'll probably get the AR at Worlds but lose the flat 400.
She's certainly the GOAT 400h of all time. But overall track athlete? Not even close.
Admittedly drugs has ruined that discussion for women (but hey her coach likely had a lot to do with that ruining in the 1980s with flo-jo).
She won by a ton - she will peak at worlds and be in the mix for the win. Sure she tied up but nowhere near disappointing
.....
Actually a great performance considering how few 400s she has run this year. Sydney have over 4 weeks to train and improve, she's focused on low 48 or high 47 come World Outdoor Championship. She has never focused solely on the flat 400m for a championship, look for great things 🥇.
If she too ran fast and broke the AR, everyone here would say she is doping. Best bet to avoid LR hate is run for the win but not run too quickly, ideally also tie up and look tired at the end of the race so not accused of doping.

I don't think she will be in the mix for the win. She will do fine in the rounds and make the final easy. But Paulino and Nasser are too good and will put her under too much pressure in the final. I see her tightening up and fading out of the medals when she can't handle Paulino and Nasser.

Even if she does fade I can't see Sydney not winning bronze at least
She will definitely go sub 49, who else is capable of that besides Paulino and Naser?
It's not disappointing. It's predictable. Sydney always receives too much credit at 400 flat. She makes the early rounds look easy and everyone assigns wildly optimistic projections toward the final. This is just like 2023.
The problem is typical of 400 runners in general. When they float around the track they look relaxed and everybody thinks they have another 1.5 or 2 seconds to spare. But once they push for a maximum effort the body becomes more boxy and tense. The clock is unforgiving over the final 50 meters.

You are not much of a fan.
She just won USA meet in an off event and qualifier for World meet.
Mission accomplished.
Now let's see how she does in Tokyo. Plenty of time for her to sharpen up for that challenge.
All time GOAT is judged over a long time period, not one USA meet. What will she do at '28 and '32 Olympics? How many overall world and Olympic titles will she win?
Unlike the other Kersee diva, Syd pretty much delivers the goods when she competes.
GOAT? not yet, but it's fun to watch her taking small steps in that direction.
