I was worried that Hunters name was on there but luckily he just scratched from the 15/10 to focus on the 5. How many guys in the US qualified for all 3? Pretty sure Fisher/Young/Blanks all did, not sure about anyone else. Seems hard to believe he could make the team over those guys, but he was 4th last year in the 10k. If it’s a bit slower maybe he’ll be able to out kick someone since iirc he’s run 3:32. Seems like a long shot but I’d never have bet on 4th from him last year.

If he out kicks one of those three and wins the 5k, he still doesn’t go unless he runs the standard. I don’t think there’s anyway he can make it on world rankings over those three. They are all in the top 11 in world rankings. Honestly, I don’t see anyone other than the 5 guys with the standard making the 5k team this year.

Probably everything highlighted above is correct . . . but there's something you both are overlooking.
WA's qualifying window lasts until Aug 24th. 3 DL meets as well as numerous other CT meets take place between the end of USAs and the 24th.
If one of Grant/Nico/Graham chooses not to race the 5000 on Aug 3rd, believe Drew has as good a chance as anyone to nab that 3rd spot.
Even if all Big 3 race the 5000, Graham seems the most vulnerable due to his lack of an overwhelming kick at this point in his career. Thus, would be only mildly surprised to see Graham not finish in the top-3.
If Cole or Cooper nab the 3rd spot, the 5000 team is set.
However, if Drew or Rocky Hansen or Sam Gilman or someone else finishes top-3, they have 3 full weeks to chase the 13:01 Q and rack up WA ranking points in Europe. Even given Drew's distaste for chasing times, have to imagine he'd be on a plane ASAP.
So, even though it would appear the US men's 5000 team will be comprised of 3 of the 5 guys with the Q regardless of their placing on Aug 3rd, that's not the case. If one of the Big 3 slips up or DNSs, we won't know who's going to Tokyo until Aug 25th.

Drew Hunter is sort of in an impossible situation where any event he decides to go with, he has a near zero chance of making the USA team. So I guess just pick the event with the most question marks and have fun with it? By that standard I would have chose the 10,000. But maybe he’s thinking he’d have more shots to chase the standard in the 5 than the 10.
Its funny because if we knew Drew’s PRs today back when he went pro, we’d be assuming he’d be a strong contender for teams and possibly even leading the US in events like the 1500 and 5000. But instead everyone around him has elevated even more and he’s on the outside looking in.
to me the DL finals wild card is meant for a situation like mu's last time. world class runner falls in a race and is left off a trials selection type team. you go over to europe, stay on your feet, throttle some folks a couple races, win your ticket. if you can't get top 3 in your country on your own steam and you're not , say, an american unning something like 100H how are you winning a one-off DL race with at least some world class talent.
that or you're world class and nursing an ouchie, 2 more weeks and you're fine but it screws you for nationals.

There would only be 1 DL league 5k left. Not sure he could even get in that race at this point. Who knows but it’s going to be a tough task even if he did end up in the top 3.

Yes, in Lausanne on Aug 20th.
However, there will be several 3000 CT races. And, the 3000 counts towards WA points for the 5000.
