Japan still makes two great things: the insanely relliable/repairable/durable Honda and Toyota motorcars, and the Sony Playstation series of video game consoles.
In the 1980s, people often joked that Japan was going to rule the world with its mighty economy. Even though its products were mainly ripoffs of US tech progress, they were just better at making and selling stuff. They were the early leader in VCRs, digital cameras, personal audio players, many things.
Then here came the Koreans and the Chinese with their LG phones and their massively cheaper generic stuff and it was game over.
Japan patented in over 200 Countries, Toyota Hydrolisys Catalyst and Hydrogen Turbines, Internal Combustion Engines etc.. It not Open IP / Open Source like Japan's inventions Bit Coin, Beta Max, VHS, Cassette Tapes, Walkman, NTT iMode Phone 1st Smart Phone (before the iPhone), Busicom 4 bit Microprocessor (before Intel 4004 Microprocessor). Toyota slammed shut copycats by hiring lawyers in 200 countries and locking down the patents. Japan is guranteed to become the first $Quadrillion economy, more than the rest of the world combined.
It's funny to think that the Japanese would want those awful American cars. Noone does.
But what no-one so far has mentioned is Japan investing 550 billion dollars in the US. Holy cow. That is not only a huge victory for trump, but surely an unsustainable drain for Japan.

1880 Meiji Restoration led to the creation of the Japan East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
Japan invested it's national wealth as the only nation which single handedly developed East-Asia into the economic miracle it is today. Japan owns are large fraction of 100,000s companies in Korea, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. having started many and assisting their growth. The active participation has tapered off as on 2000-2005. The Japanese people's ownership, passion, and dedication towards the Japan Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere will never end.
