Manic Street Preachers, (from Wales) lead singer James Dean Bradfield (born 1969) was the Welsh schoolboy Steeplechase champion and top 3 at UK juniors age 19 before he gave it form injury.
Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band was a mid distance runner at Maryland State University (now University of Maryland Eastern Shore) in the late 1950s through early 1960s. He went to school on a combined athletic/music scholarship. He was on the same 4X800 as future pros Art Shell and Emerson Boozer. Clemons himself had a shot at going pro, but was injured in a car accident which ended his athletic career.

There was no such thing as pro back then.
The NFL was founded in 1920. Clemons did, in fact, come close to going pro. I believe he was planning on trying out for the Cowboys before his injury.
