Pulled away from Dylan Jacobs, Luis Grijalva (still returning from injury). Interestingly, Gary Martin went on to finish the race in 13:18 after pacing. Justyn Knight also 13:18.90.

I'm confused. These results show Martin as DNF. Singh at 13:18. The result I saw last night showed Martin at 13:18. Must be a chip error.

Krop- ran poorly after a 12:51 where he was 10th or so
Kipkorir- dropped in 10k trials, poor races otherwise
Kurgat- OK hard to beat
Kwemoi- lousy all year, scrapped Monaco/sat out 10k trials
Alamisi- really young, struggled in DL race
C. Kemboi- merely OK all season
Kiplangat/Kipkurui- might be happy with 10k spot, either way Musau as good at 5,000
D. Kipkoech- won African U20 Trials, unclear if he’d go for senior team
Yep, question might be his return to racing at altitude without much acclimation. Did Kurgat say he's doubling, if so I think he'll make this team too. Dark horse for me is Emmanuel Kiprop if he's there. Last two years with Asahi Kasei in Japan running very well. 3/3 wins earlier this year just no races since 17 May

Haven’t heard either way. Also the youngster Samuel Kibathi, I wonder what the deal is. He is consistently good, but it seems it’s very deliberate with him despite him being 20. You’re more dialed into Japanese running than me, but is he going to start getting into some real high-level racing soon?

Not sure either about Kibathi. He seems to struggle with consistency/injuries. Scratched a couple races in Japan this spring before returning with a nice win in June but nothing since. He didn't get invited to trials (invite list below) but I'd find it kind of strange if he gets back to racing in June then intentionally shuts it back down to get ready for the Ekiden/late track season in Japan. In Hokkaido there's the main Japanese track summer series called Hokuren focussed solely on distance/mid-d but he's not in any of those meets either
Wow what a performance from Rocky Hansen, led a ton of that, stuck to Musau till 300m to go, and held on for 13:07. With someone to draft off, he’d be threatening 13:00. As a sophomore. Praying he stays healthy and gets some great training in this summer, because he’ll be an absolute monster in XC next year and we need an American to step up now that Blanks is gone. And of course, if you’re contending at XC in this era, you’re contending for sub-13/27 on the track.
Also who’s to say Musau isn’t 18? Myers, Ruthe, Laros, and even our own Lutkenhaus and Hedengren are running equally impressive times at similar (or younger) ages (maybe Ruthe isn’t quite there but he’s so young). And Hansen is like a year older and not too far off. Maybe Musau is just a little bit more talented than Hansen, or has been a bit luckier with injuries? Maybe the prevailing idea that an 18 year old absolutely couldn’t run those times is why Americans aren’t running those times at 18?

For Musau it’s more circumstantial. He finished high school really young (if his birthdate is to believed), and there’re videos from 2022-3 where he certainly doesn’t look 15-16. Not to underthink this but it’s the same with Mehary, and I’m not sure why two guys are precocious athletically were also graduating high school in 16 when that is not the norm. In both cases, the age is more a footnote at this point.
