Probably a combination of wanting to stay out of traffic and betting the field would tie up in the last 200m after going out so fast. Maybe he misjudged how far back he was, or overestimated how much ground he could make up in the last 300m.
Either way, the 800m is a different event now. Guys can hang on and don't tie up in the last 200m the way they used to. Thank Maurten for that.
I can see thinking don't get out fast in that field to not get caught in jostling, but he was way too slow.
Even if he even split he runs 1:42.4 which doesn't win.
With that field I don't think there is much of a middle ground.
Last year in Monaco his sauce hadn’t kicked in. Same this year. By Paris, his crew had it dialed in for a ridiculous negative split performance. By Tokyo, they’ll have it dialed in for a negative split 1:40.4, and people will defend him because he’s a “nice guy” and a POC.
Not the first time he's raced like this, hopefully he'll race smarter at the World Champs. He also has been training for and racing a bunch of 1500s this year, so may not be ready yet to go out fast in an 800.

Very true, they attack Hoey yet fall all over each other defending this obvious juice-hound.

No, it's not the first time. After he abandoned the devoted frontrunner approach a few years ago he's now all over the place and once in a while outsmarts himself.
He has so much talent he can get away with minor mistakes or even moderate ones. But not to today's level.
I think he wanted to go to the back of the pack, but the guy in second last place let a gap open leaving Arop too far back, especially with such a large field to get around.

The other problems were that Burgin got spiked right before he started his move through the field which made him go wider and upset the rhythm too. After that, Sedjati and him battled for positioning before the turn. Arop got it, but running a contested 12.4 killed his finish. Ironically the exact thing he tried to avoid (a too-hard 100m segment) by going out slow, ended up happening anyway because of the race dynamics.
He just cut more than a second from his season best while running an experimental strategy and leaving a ton of time out there. Bet he's feeling on top of the world today

ya
all the records from 100 to 1500 go down if you don't tie up
the 400 is infamous for a lousy last 100
epo bicarb oxygen loading are the hacks
revolution
even the 100, bolt coach had the guys run decent 400m, and long sprint endurance early
it carries over to the last 30 m of the race.
the 100m is 10% aerobic, you can get a couple of meters advantage there
if you're on EPO, then you don' compromise anabolic system, and EPO has growth factor effects, and the benefit is RECOVERY, and you can up your volume in training and not BREAK DOWN.
caps are in there because of the one dimensional idea people have.
its super sause
testosterone is the second super sause
with the legal hacks, you can amp epo and test naturally.
