In the athletic barriers thread someone mentioned the challenge of getting an event's world record more than 20 seconds under 60 second 400m pace.
The events:
400m: 40.00 (60.00)
600m: 1:10.00 (1:30.00)
800m: 1:40.00 (2:00.00)
1000m: 2:10.00 (2:30.00)
1500m: 3:25.00 (3:45.00)
Mile: 3:41.40 (4:01.40)
2000m: 4:40.00 (5:00.00)
3000m: 7:10.00 (7:30.00)
In my opinion:
400 is impossible.
600, 2000, and 3000 are about as likely to happen as a female sub-4 at the moment; in other words, implausible.
800 is on the tail end of plausibility.
1000, 1500, and mile are extremely difficult but possible.
