Josh Hoey 1K WR attempt!

Find it interesting you make zero mention in your post of the actual record-holder. Ngeny's 3:43 mile, 3:28 1500, and ferocious kick at the 2000 Olympics are things that Hoey couldn't do...he very rarely ran the 800 so hard to say how much faster he could've gone than his 1:44 PB, but no question he was a better athlete than Hoey.

Would love to see Hoey take a shot, but I just don't see him running faster than 2:12...very similar athlete to Makhloufi, who also failed in a WR attempt running 2:13.0. Not sure there's an athlete currently running who could break that record (maybe the version of Hocker that closed a 3:27 in 2:17), but it definitely deserves a shot.

Agree that it’s ridiculous the OP didn’t even mention the actual world record holder and just talked about Coe/Cram.
No chance Hocker, even in Olympic fitness, is breaking the 1,000m world record.

Good shout, but even though he's gotten some good wins over 1500/mile I'd need to see him run 3:27 at minimum before I'd believe it. Ngeny was a 3:26 (converted) runner with incredible wheels - truly monstrous at this distance.

Wanyonyi has a better shot. He probably is sub 3:30 as well (his training partner ran 3:27) and is faster than Hoey at 800

Probably because Ngeny setting the record sp obviously showed the efficacy of drugs. Look at his performances in open 800 races. Indefensible unless one is being dishonest.

Ngeny's was a EPO monster. Coe's 2:12 is the legit WR. It's not even debatable.

Ngeny's WR was hardly optimised. The first lap was a whooping 49 (first 200 in 23 secs). If he was a little more conservative like Coe, he could've run significantly faster. And Wanyonyi doesn't need a 3:27 to pull that off because he's a 1:41 low runner.

definitely not. i've been following the sport for almost 40 years and have never heard that the second best 1k time is widely accepted as a top 5 all time run.

The world indoor 800 champion isn't a 800 runner? He has a better chance of beating Hocker, Nuguse, Kessler and some collegiates and others than making the US 800 team?

You seem to only care about place, not time.

Hoey has only ran a handful of 15/1600s in his lifetime. Showed up and popped off a 329. With specific training he is easily a 327 guy, which puts him within 1 second of the wr in the 15/1600.

He a miler. Not a half miler.

Coe's 2:12.18 was on par with his 1:41.73. Just astonishing for such a rarely run distance. It definitely is one of the greatest records in athletics history. Now, 44 years later, the record from Ngeny is still just 0.22 faster. Now the 1000m WR is the "weakest" from all men's running WRs. It really "should" be sub 2:11, and while looking at the recent improvements over both the 800m and the 1500m, sub 2:10 shouldn't be out of reach in the seasons to come.

The first candidate is Wanyonyi. But also others like Hoey really should go for it.
