More like a runner who does some triathlon. He’s got PBs of 3:46 1500m, 50s 400m, not to mention he’s a senior in High School and Sam is only a sophomore.
According to instagram looking to be the youngest sub 4 minute miler on American soil as he will be 16 and 85 days.
It sounds like he might be running the B race at Oregon though. Hopefully they give him entry to the main event.
The Pre mile?
Unfortunately with a 3.58 PR in the year 2025 there is simply no way that is going to happen. The "international" mile will be plenty strong enough for him to run a good time.

He literally just won the World Duathlon title a week after spanking Ruthe. And there is no such thing as a sophomore in New Zealand you wannabe yank.
according to instagram he TT's a 2:52 1200m effort. That's absolutely crazy!
He accomplished something I thought we would never see again. Jim Arriola held the age 15 mile record for 48 years! That is madness. Ruthe could hold that record for longer than Arriola did. That would be beyond madness.

And your point being? He’s still an elite level runner for his age group. Sure the term sophomore isn’t used in NZ but it’s the equivalent of the third year of high school and is what most followers on LetsRun will know the meaning of.
Great Dane, a couple of questions for you as you seem to be close to the situation.
Ruthe just turned 16 years old. He's clearly a pretty developed kid but he is still only 16. He had an amazing NZ summer season - 7.56 for 3000m, 3.40, the 3.58 mile, but he's already made one trip to the US to run that Arcadia 2 mile, he's just run his national schools XC and now he's flying across 5 times zones to run an elite mile. Any concern with this amount of running and stress on the body in general? Trying to cross reference with the best American 16 years olds and this just seems a lot.
Any insight with the fathers obsession with bettering age-group times? Seems a slightly dangerous path to be heading down. Every age he gets to it's about "faster than Jakob at the same age" or "faster than Myers". "WR for a 15 year old" - I guess next is the "WR for a 16 year old" - what are your thoughts on this?

I've exchanged a few messages with Sam's father. There's nothing that looks like an obsession with bettering times. Don't confuse interest with obsession. If you really love to run, as he tells me Sam does, and you're good enough at it for bettering age group records is realistic, why wouldn't you do it? Lots of kids Sam's age who run might want to get under 4:30, or 5:00 or any other time for the mile, just for example, that seems challenging for someone of their ability. It's just that for some the challenging times are a lot faster than they are for others.

No need to be defensive - but clearly you haven't seen any of his fathers social media posts. Maybe you should start there before commenting. Thanks.

I'm not sure what seems defensive to you. But I have seen many of Ben's social media posts. Maybe you should ask what I've seen and start there before commenting. Thanks.

A post 3 days ago.
"Trying to become the youngest ever sub 4 miler on US soil.... Sam will be 16 and 85 days. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the youngest at 16 years 259 days... took the record from Jim Ryun who was 17 years 37 days"
Prior to the race he broke 4.
"4.01.71 would be a PB and new world record at 15 years. Sub 4 would be the youngest ever to break 4 beating current Olympic Gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen who was 16 and 250 days. Sam will be 15 and 341 days on the day..."
A very common theme of being obsessed with years and days compared to others and how they match up, as if any of it really matters. Time for you to fade away on this, I didn't invite you to comment on my question it was directed at someone else. Thanks.
