See on his Strava he only flew in yesterday and didn't feel great from start
As someone whose also not from US and has to fly across time zones to get there and always feel terrible running for a few days afterwards it makes perfect sense that can just be an off day

Totally right. He must be heavily jet-lagged and said he didn't feel great. He also doesn't live at altitude in Norway, so that race has got to be a shock to the system. He's the favorite at WSER until proven otherwise.

I'll add that his training as shown on Strava has been super impressive, but for a 100 mile race not a 2-mile race straight uphill at altitude.
Jet lagged and screwed up bicarb prep or other gut issue make sense. He seems very fit otherwise based on recent threads discussing his recent training video. (He doesn't live at altitude but we know he has/had an altitude tent that he at least used in the past.)
Other people who bombed, the biggest surprise for me was Allie McLaughlin, who was only 29th. Maybe her hip still hurts? She was followed by another favorite, Rachel Tomajcyzk, in 30th. Fast podcaster Emkay Sullivan was only 44th too.
Walmsley's wife Jess ran well to get 7th in a deep field.

Personally, I am of similar age and I feel quite stiff already after 3 hour drive, not to even mention 10+ hours flight. Doing this kind of maximum intensity effort of ~20 minutes immediately next day after the flight must feel quite awful. Perhaps this wasn't a problem when he was 10-15 years younger and was travelling all the time, racing almost every weekend. Let's hope that this is not indicative of any more serious issue.

Per her comments on freetrail podcast, Emkay Sullivan is 22 weeks pregnant and wasn't going all-out.
He's 37 and has been running at a high level for a long time. Age + wear and tear catches up with everyone eventually.
It's not age. Joe gray is over 40 and got 2Nd OA. He is the GOAT for USA
Well, to put it into context Joe has done mainly sub ultras (a lot of short vert races mixed in there) and Killian all kinds of distances like sub, 100 milers and mountain(s) so I would think has more wear & tear.
I'd say a 41 year old with elite marks across ceoss country, track and mountain running has more wear than a 37 yr old who does low impact skimo and Trail events. Kilian has no elite marks in anything outside of trail and skimo. Gray has excelled at every genre. Respect that man!
