steriods probably helped. remember, that was in the early 90's when drugs weren't regulated as much.

I would also say that the guy in the photo somebody linked to does not weigh 300 lbs, unless he's 7 feet tall.
I was at UW in the early/mid 80's and saw them doing a mile (actually 1600) once. They definitely were using the track. However, most players were definitely NOT going under 6:30 when I saw it.
Jacques Robinson (a RB and the dad of Nate Robinson--the incredible little guard who now plays in the NBA) used to come to our dorm cluster a lot--for reasons I won't specify :) I once asked him about their running and he said something about there being a gold standard of excellence (UW colors are purple and gold) around 6 minutes for the mile. But, I got the impression it was more a goal and not an absolute requirement. I seem to recall he said he made the standard his freshman year but didn't think he'd do it the year I asked him about it (his sophomore year--he'd gotten fat).
Don James was a pretty good college coach, so if he had his athletes at least aspiring to run a mile "fast" (by average persons standards), he must have known what he was doing.
Yep. I am quite sure somebody thought they had reached 4 laps when it was only 3.
this story i can believe - sounds way more realistic than the article which of course said the 6:30 and 6 miles were required
you guys are just mad because those guys are/were better athletes than you will ever be.
think about it for a minute. any reasonably fit Division I football player with any speed should be able to go sub-6:00 for a mile. only the big linemen should have a problem with it.
i went to UNC-Chapel Hill. the basketball team does a mile run at the start of practice. if i remember correctly, the record is in the 4:30's and guys routinely go sub-5:00.

yes, you got me there, i am jealous of fat football players from 20 years ago

have you watched football lately? most are carrying around a ton of extra weight... there is a big difference between 40 meter speed (which I will certainly grant they have) and mile speed

who was talking about basketball players at redneck school? we were talking about football players, last i checked football and basketball players are built much differently

So I went into the gym once during their practice, shot a free -throw, made it, and for the last four months I've been bragging every time I see one of their coaches about my 100% free-throw percentage in all competitions.
Dude thats awesome haha.
only the linemen carry extra weight
yeah, UNC is such a redneck school, what a suprise that such a backwoods place is ranked year after year as one of the 5 best public colleges in the country - must be a lot of rednecks out there in the world
i'm guessing you couldn't get in
don't confuse UNC with NCSU

More appropriate might be bragging to the coach that you made it from half court 100% of the time.
UNC isn't Duke, but then, what is? ;)
The Tarheel is right though; it is ranked #1 in "best values" by Kiplinger and is always in the top 5 over-all along with Michigan, UVA, Cal-Berkely and UCLA.
Have any of you ever seen Emtman in person? The man is a pretty awesome speciman. No doubt he could run a 5:14 mile.
I believe it. A lot of our best potential runners most likely swinging bats, kicking balls, throwing, catching and running with footballs. Or doing nothing with their life.

Better athletes they may be. But better milers? Nah dude. I don't care if you are the league MVP, football and distance running are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. You are delusional if you think the majority of college/professional football players can run under 5. They are incredibly strong and explosive, but that only takes you so far around the track before you start to tank big time. They are tremendous athletes, but being a great athlete doesn't necessarily mean you are a great endurance athlete.
Basketball is another story. Those guys are moving more continuously than football players and they aren't built like small tanks. They are taller and thinner with more continous motion in training. However, with that said, I seriously doubt that UNC players "routinely" run under 5. You pulled that our of thin air, admit it.
I do agree with you that UNC is a good school. It's certainly not a redneck school. That's NC State or UNC-Charlotte.
I can't believe I'm even bothering to join this thread.
But...
Think of the decathletes, the really really good ones. The ones that *might* be able to make an NFL roster and not get cut during training camp.
Now... what do they run in the 1500m (granted it's at the end of a decathlon, but also granted they do train a *little* for the 1500m).
So, with that in mind, I'd guess that WRs, RBs, DBs, and most TEs and LBs could run a mile in... 5:15-30ish. Sure, there would be some exceptions that would be faster.
Regardless. Who really cares. These guys are amazing althetes!
By the way, I remember watching this guy play for UW. He was a freakish athlete. Pac-10 defensive player of the year I think. Outland trophy finalist, *I think*. I'm not sure if he was really 300lbs, but I do actually beleive that he might have run 5:14.
Was it like their football 40's? Did they get Tissot to do the timing? We used have races in school. The "mile" was 4 laps of the football field. Was it one of those "miles"?
am 260 and i have ran under 5.33 mile, click the link below to see my finish

that was hilarious.
