I had a long chat with Jessica Hull after her 2nd place 3:58.36 showing in the 1500 at Grand Slam Track Philadelphia today.

When we started talking about Faith Kipyegon's upcoming sub-4 mile world record attempt and when I asked her something along the lines of 'Hey if they offered you a spot on the start line, what would you say?' She had some very interesting comments.

I’d say hey can I pace her? I think I’d love to see this attempt and then I’d love to see her do it in a women’s only race and do a… a flat out world record attempt with an all-star pacing squad bringing her all the way to the go myself. I think we could get it really deep and I think she could make the women’s only world record like 4:03 kinda thing.

Rojo: you’d be willing to help her do it?

Absolutely. And if she… if she watches this (inteview). I wanna help her break eight in the 3K too like… I’d love to see her have a go at breaking a world record and eight minute PR because I think… I think she can do that.

If I had to guess, I’d say Hull is eternally grateful to Kipyegon because Kipyegon hooked Hull up with her supplier. The connection helped Hull with her extraordinary improvement last year and culminated with an Olympic medal. Just a hunch.

It’s reasonable to guess she feels some gratitude to Kipyegon for effectively pacing her to a huge 3:50.83 PB, and would be happy to return the favor.

Fingers crossed that someone gets this to actually happen! We'd all love to see that run and if it does go off, we'll ALL be watching (even if you think it is just a gimmick). It is one of those things that would totally go mainstream.

I don't think she can break 4, but she'll come close enough to make it fun. For people who aren't track nerds or insiders, "only 5 seconds" is basically the same as "almost did it!" That will be enough for the majority of the people watching...

As for why Hull would want to help, it makes total sense that anyone who has a love of the sport or a sense of history would want to be part of it. Wouldn't you?

Bannister's pacemakers are still known to this day, by the way...

Brasher took to the front for the first two laps, or 800m, before peeling off and allowing Chataway to come through. With Bannister running in his slipstream, Chataway kept the record pace on track for the next 500m before he could do more and Bannister was left to finish the job over the final 300m.

As much as I think a sub 4 mile is not possible, a sub 8:00 3k seems more feasible. Hull pacing through 2k (which we know she is capable of based on her 5:19 2k record) with chebet and kipyegon and Tsegay all in the race would be absolutely insane. Thats the race I really want to see. I think chebet could close the final k in 2:40 if Hull paced through 2k on track.

Smart athlete and wise to offer pacing. Hull could benefit from setting record pace as well and gain a new Aussie record during the event. Best time to do it is when all the pressure to succeed is not on you.
