I am a Texan, All American at Texas. Olympic Trials finalist in 1992. Obviously I am a fan.
That said, I was a teacher and coach for nearly 30 years in addition to military service and two deployments. Why do I say all this?
Our federal deficit is $36T with annual interest payments (just interest) at $1T per year. Almost the same as the DOD budget. Let that sink in...
Debt will build this and it's a problem at the national and state level. Texas has a budget surplus but the oil sector is slowling production and the Golden Goose won't be here forever. Furthermore, POS Abbott and his sicophants gave a tax break for the wealthy if you read between the lines on the private school vouchers when the charter schools were doing a good job of creating competition. It's a boondoggle.
Athletics has a role in the educational process but it has become warped. Our kids now known neither the soft skills not the hard skills and think about how that money could go towards fixing that else we will fall further behind our competition. It is why I can no longer teach and while having a sports complex like this is super cool, from the perspective of national security, productivity by preparing kids for the workforce and having an 8th grader be able to do Algebra with both pencil and paper and technology is far more important so in my humble opinion, this is a poor decision.
This state and country are led by poor decision makers and I will leave it at that.
