he went for it. he knew only the top 12 advanced and ran with the lead group as long as he could. I respect him more going for it and blowing up rather than just playing it safe. THAT would have been dissapointing.

I haven't found the splits, but Habtom Samuel (26:51 guy) ran 28:09 for second in the same race which likely means first half was slow and paced picked up significantly second half where Young was dropped along the way. I see a lot of studs in that race that finished in front of him. Anyone find a video link of the race?

Nope but racing a 10k in the Texas heat/ humidity is no joke. Several All Americans were behind Young today.
Especially if you’re from a west coast climate, feels like you’re breathing in straight fire after 6k.

He went to the water table a few times, sometimes successfully getting water. But when they accelerated in the last 2000 he could not stick.
It’s easy to judge off one race, but context matters. Championship-style races are unpredictable—pace, weather, tactics, and pressure all play a role. Lex is young and still learning how to navigate rounds and high-stakes fields
The weather in Flagstaff and Provo is not hot and humid, but BYU and NAU both qualified two runners. His teammate, Cole Sprout, also qualified. There are no tactics in a 10000m qualifier. There’s plenty of room to run and you maintain contact, or you don’t.
It was a bad race for him but maybe he can rally and qualify in the 5000m.

Splits are available at the link below. Looks like the leaders covered the first half in ~14:17. At 5200, Lex was near eventual winner Kipkurui; Lex reached that mark in 14:51.88, just behind Kipkurui's 14:51.70. The eventual 12th place finisher, Timothy Chesondin, was at 14:53.76.
Just one lap later, Kipkurui was at 16:00.27, Chesondin was at 16:02.06, and Lex was at 16:02.36. Lex fought back and hung on near qualifying position for a little while but then started to lose contact. At 7600, all the eventual qualifiers were at 21:40-21:43, and he was back in 21:47. On the next lap, he slowed to a 72 (after running 68-69 the previous few laps) and the gap grew from there.

That was my first thought. "Where was the race?" A hot location so I give him a pass. Bay Area to Texas is a shock.
