Per the official Western States , Jim Walmsley has dropped out the race and is being replaced by Cocodona 250 champion Dan Green. This comes on the heels of last year’s third place finisher and CCC champion Hayden Hawks also dropping out.
Last year in dropped from UTMB due to his knee. I wonder if that's the issue ?
Hayden had a minor knee surgery so did Zach Miller last dec. My guess is it is due to the new trail shoes they're racing in now with the carbon plate. It's one thing to race a marathon in carbon shoes, but to race a hundred miles in carbon shoes can't be good for the legs.
Call it now the top three will be between Caleb Olson, Adam Peterman and Jeff Mogavero.
Gimme some Seth Ruhling
He's still more of a 50k to 100k runner and hasn't changed up his training much for western states. Jeff Mogavero who trains with Adam Peterman just banged out a 160 mile week last week, Caleb Olson won trans gran canaria earlier this year and had the fastest western states debut last year and Adam Peterman has won Western states. Adrian Macdonald is my dark house pick for this year's Western states. Seth Ruhling will probably land in that 5th to 10th place.

Seriously hilarious how our expert prognosticators' podium picks don't include: the guy who just won Transvulcania, the defending UTMB champion, or the best trail runner of all time...
Referring to Kilian Jornet? His best time on this course is slower than the women's course record. Western states is a running race, not a hiking race like utmb and hardrock is.

You mean the Kilian Jornet that easily beat Jim head to head at Sierre-Zinal and ran 2:25 for the CR there?

You're really projecting WSER based on the results of a 19 mile race with 7200 feet of vert?
Killian is the greatest mountain runner in history, but this isn't really a mountain race and Killian hasn't attempted a running performance like this in a long time.

Well, you kinda right but wrong at the same time. Kilian won WS100 twice in 2010 and 2011. Courtney Dauwalter was 5 minutes faster in 2023, that's 12 years later.
I saw him doing a training run in the Khumbu region two years ago near Tyangboche in about 3600 meters. The lady in the Last Restaurant told me he was doing that run almost everyday. That was while he was getting ready for an unsuccessful Everest attempt that year.
This "hiker" is the best mountain ultra runner the world has seen.

We're talking current fitness at ultras. He hasn't done anything spectacular at ultra races since his utmb win back in 2022. He jogged in a second place at Chianti to get a golden ticket, but that was the least competitive golden ticket race of the season. Outside of the top three there, there was no depth. It felt fixed to get Jornet and Bouillard in western states. The winning time this year for states will probably be over a hour faster, maybe close to a hour and a half faster than what he won it in back in 2011.
