Nine months on from becoming the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion in Paris, Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet dropped down in distance to become the second-fastest women’s 3000m runner of all time
Flotrack bugmen are implying this is the clean world record or some other such nonsense. As in, we're supposed to disregard all 90s Chinese times but assume Kenyan times are legitimate, when it's Kenya who's been linked to bust after bust this past decade. Absolutely comical.
My "favorite" part is, even with all the 2025-era dope, Italian coaching, wavelights, pacers, clown shoes, etc Chebet still didn't get *that* close to 8:06. Wang Junxia, I kneel.

agree with all of this but that chinese track was 10000% short. it was torn down immedietly after the 1993 games ended.

Even with all the PEDs in the world it’s hard to imagine 8:06 by that person at that time. Maybe the track really was short

It really makes you think the track had to be short because they never performed to that level again. Yes Wang and someone else got medals at Worlds or Olympics but those 1500m and 3000m performances were never equalled by any of 1990 runners.

It's also possible that they were men (but I don't remember them looking particularly masculine).
What bothers me about this is it's one of those performances where the athlete isn't visibly tired at all afterward. She was walking around with her flowers extracting her congrats from all the collapsed mortals after they finished.
I've had PRs where I felt great, but I always spent a good while recovering unless I hadn't given 100%. So I think Chebet was potentially in 8:05 shape here, and only hit 8:11 because she set the lights for 8:15.
And you know what people would say if she hit 8:05

Obviously there were other races in those games besides the women’s 1500m and 3000m. If you check the results, all men’s times were modest and the same for the women’s 400 and 800m:
Second only to Junxia Wang’s admittedly-doped WR of 8:06. Not sure even Faith Kipyegon could handle two 4:05s back to back.
I'm very interested in this "admittedly doped" part. Did I miss something?
Junxia has admitted that Ma Junren allegedly forced his “army” to take doping substances. Not sure she ever disclosed exactly what, though. She did leave his training camp and still won medals at 5k and 10k in ‘96, if I remember right.

so the WR back then was 14:36. Looks like Ma's army, or the Chinese overall, eventually lowered that to 14:28. That has now been obliterated, but 8:06 still stands.

Have you watched Chebet run before? She's very stoic during her races and almost never grimaces. She looked more pained and exhausted today than I've ever seen her
