Cancel/Postpone the California CIF T&F State Meet

Simple fix. Move to coastal city.

Prelim running events start at 5:00pm and finals 5:45pm. Field events are earlier. The state meet used to always be at Cerritos College in So Cal with better climate but schools in the north complained about always having to travel. So then around 1997 the meet alternated between Cerritos and Sacramento for awhile. Starting around 2009 they decided to meet in the middle in Clovis which is always hot. They might move back the start 2 or 3 hours until the sun is starting to go down, but they aren't canceling the meet.

They allow boys to compete in the girls division. They don’t care about what’s best for athletes at all.

Of course, but they want the meet to be within driving distance for as many high schools as possible. That’s why the state XC meet is in Fresno.

Did anyone from Palm Springs or El Centro qualify? Seems they will have a huge advantage in these temps. If it were a college or pro meet I'd say run it, but these are high schoolers. This meet should be moved to the coast - its too hot and thus too late to hold a meet inland when most of the population lives on the much cooler coast.

The State Meet has been like this the past 15 years. Sure, sometimes it’s a little cooler, but being 100+ (or close) is common. The 3200 is the only event significantly affected but it’s at ~ 9:00 PM and is surprisingly nice even though it’s warm. People run fast in 1600/3200 every year. And the Sprints are FAST. Bring some ice water or get a snow cone and enjoy the great event!

The state meet never had a permanent home at Cerritos. The CIF state meet has bounced around the state since it was created back in 1915 and Fresno literally hosted the first one! I attached a link full of results and locations if you don't believe me.

I understand I'm being pedantic, but don't misrepresent this as being a recent issued caused by people complaining.

You’re correct. I happened to be coaching HS in the decade 1988-1998 where it was always at Cerritos so that’s how it played out at that time.

By 5 pm it will only “feel like” 104 - the actual temps will be down to 103 by then….

This is normal weather for Fresno this time of year. Everyone knows what to expect. I was at USTAF in Sacramento in 2017 when it was at least 10 degrees hotter.

If this is normal weather for Fresno this time of year, that means they should it move it some place where this isn't normal. California has a large amount of potential facilities. It's silly to tie yourself to a bad one and say, "We just have to make the best of it", when there are indeed better alternatives.

How many of those alternatives have facilities that are about half-way between the main population centers?

If you hold it in SoCal all the people in the north will complain because they have to drive all day to get there the day before, giving LA teams a big advantage. Same complaint if the meet is in NorCal.
